I had my vsg on 3/23. I came home from the hospital yesterday morning. I haven't been able to tolerate much other than Water so far. Today I was finally able to eat about 1 oz of Jello. Most everything seems to make me sick to my stomach. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm also struggling to get all of my fluids because of this. Right now I'm feeling like this surgery was a bad choice. I hope I feel differently soon.

This is normal. You should feel better in a few days.

I was sleeved on 3/10 and had to stay an extra night at the hospital because my stomach was swollen and i couldn't pass the barium cocktail to check for a leak. It has been 15+ days and I can't even fathom eating anything. Anytime I try pureed food it seems to just sit in my stomach. Has this been normal for some? I am trying to maintain my Protein levels, but I'd guess I'm probably around 40-50 grams a day and maybe 40 oz of Fluid (not including shakes). Has this been normal for other folks out there? I read on here how some are moving to purees after ten days and it just blows my mind.

Hi all. I had my sleeve on 3/24. To start off the week before my surgery was scheduled I was let go from my job. So while I'm trying to get my head in the game and prep for the surgery I had to fill out unemployment paperwork and try to get health insurance for anything I needed post surgery. So with all that stress I still had my surgery. My surgeon was awesome! This was only my second surgery ever and I really didn't know how anesthesia would effect me. The first day I was so drugged up that I had to apologize to friends and family for falling asleep on them when they came to visit. Then the next day hit, very nauseated and had a few dry heaves. I also was unable to pee so they put a Foley catheter in. Embarrassing much! They also kept me a second night just because I wasn't able to get enough fluids in. After they figured out what meds worked best for me they took the catheter out and I was able to get fluids down. Now a couple days later I'm doing good. I do burp after every sip but I've read this is normal. Water water water is my motto and tea is heaven! I even had Tomato Soup today (which I used to despise) and it was so good. I can't do Jello it makes me want to gag when I try to eat it. I've taken to using shot glasses to measure out my Protein Shakes and Soups so I don't overdo anything.

I had my procedure done on March 23rd. The procedure and hospital stay went well, but now that I'm home I'm a little worried about my new life style change. Not so much about the change, but more about how I'm going to consume enough liquids to stay hydrated and get my 80 grams of Protein in each day. I've been sipping my Water and even started on some full liquids, but at this point it is not where I need to be on my daily intake requirements. Tonight I woke up with heartburn, and my Dr. did not prescribe any heartburn medication for me. I will have to call and see if there is anything over the counter that I can take. How's everyone else doing with their liquid intake and heartburn issues?

You're probably exactly where you should be having just had your surgery. Ask your doctor about taking Zantac for the heartburn. If you're focused on Protein Drinks that should get you the protein you need and also counts as liquids toward your 64 oz. Have you tried Isopure? It has 40 grams of protein. I recommend the banana, orange, pineapple since I can actually detect a fruit flavor in there. They do also have a bit of an odd flavor but I get past it knowing how much protein is in there. It does get easier. I was sleeved on the 9th. Had 2 oz of halibut and 1 oz of couscous for dinner last night. It's a process. You'll do great.

I had my sleeve surgery on Monday 3/23. I was the last surgery of the day and never got out of recovery and into a room until about 9 p.m. I woke up in so much pain. After the pain meds started working I was much happier. Everyone kept asking if I was nauseaus but I wasn't. I just had pain. I walked quite a few laps throughout that first night. My nurse told me to stop and get rest, because I was walking so much. The next morning they took me for the swallow test. The constant up and down out of the wheel chair was pretty painful and I needed to rest for a few hours before I could do anything. That first day I was only able to eat a popsicle, a few bites of Jello, and a few sips of tea/water. I was more successful with sucking on ice than trying to drink Water.

They tried to switch me to oral pain meds on Tuesday, but I have some allergies and what they tried to put me on, didn't really help the pain. I went from being very mobile to needed help getting out of bed so they put me back on IV meds. I still didn't have any nausea, but it hurt to swallow. THe pain was in my stomach, not my esophagus.

I chose to stay in the hospital until Thursday. I could have left on Wednesday, but I felt like my pain wasn't managed enough to leave yet.

Today is Saturday and I am still recovering at home. I am still taking pain meds, but not as frequently as I was before. I was told I could take 2 pills every 4 hours and I am taking 1 pill about every 6 hours. I hope to be off them completetly in day or 2. My problem now is that my throat and tongue hurt. THey feel raw. My tongue even looks weird and white. Chewing my Vitamins hurts my tongue and throat. I hope that clears up soon. It is very painful. I do feel like i could be more active than I am, but I am trying to take it easy since I have a tendency to over do it.

Looking for some advice/thoughts. I return to work on Monday after 3 weeks off. I work in a very, very large office and told my immediate 2 bosses that I was "having surgery and expected to be off work 2 to 3 weeks". I didn't elaborate at all because it's really none of their business and as it turns out they couldn't keep their mouths shut and told at least one other person on the team who I used to report to who immediately asked me about it. With that I told a few other team members which brings to a total about 15 people that know that I was out for surgery. Post surgery plus the 2 weeks pre-op I have lost 19 pounds which means there is a noticeable weight loss. While that excites me I am also nervous about the questions I will face. I am normally a very open person so it feels awkward to smile and tell everyone I'm doing well and, yes, maybe lost a few pounds while out. Throw in eating 3 oz of cottage cheese for lunch and my cover is blown for sure. I hate the idea of being the topic of gossip. Anyone else out there not wanting to go public with the reason for your leave? How have you handled it? Help.

Dang I would have gone straight to HR about your bosses. They are not allowed to say anything about it to anyone.

I'm doing the same thing! Since I actually had mine repaired too, it works. I even mention that due to my extremely problematic ulcers I am on a slow and developing diet (also true.) Two weeks out as of today and it's been really tough. Still not getting enough Protein unfortunately but luckily fluids are going strong. I am having a lot of head hunger in addition to real hunger at this stage :( I smell food and I miss it. I am hoping it gets better!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
