3 days Post Op, Shakes aren't going down so well, Help!

Recommended Posts

So I am 3 days post op, getting in my liquids and Protein today, however the Premier shakes I liked pre surgery hurt trying to get them down. Anyone have a suggestion for a protein I can mix with Water? I tried room temp that didn't help. Also if I have trouble with dairy can and will it go away as i heal? i am or was a milk lover, yogurts etc...

NotsobigMike...it is way too early for you to be drinking those shakes. You should be on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks after surgery. Eat Jello, Soup, or Protein mixed with Water. Try the Unjury Protein mix. It tastes the best. After two weeks you introduce the other things. Follow the plan your doctor gave you. You will soon be back on the milk based Protein Shakes and they will not longer hurt when you drink. It is a slow process... don't rush it. You need time to heal. Just because your incisions are healed does not mean you are healed internally so take it easy and don't injure yourself. I started out with jello, apple sauce, scrambled egg, chicken soup, etc... I know you think you will never be "normal" again but that is not true. Your stomach will keep you from eating a lot but you will be able to eat just about anything in time. I'm a year out and although some things are more difficult to eat than others. I can truly eat anything I want, but just a small portion of it. Life is good, not easy.... but good is good enough. Good luck to you.

I am one week post op. I am using Isopure unflavored in low sodium chicken broth. I let broth cool to about 130 degrees and add the Isopure. It goes down really well.

It depends on the doctor. 2 days clear liquids, then 7 days full liquids here.

Try cutting the shake with a touch of Water, or milk.

I also use Isopure mixed with Powerade zero. I am on day 3, and have gotten 71g of Protein, and about 35 oz fluids. All my fluids had protein in them. I feel good, no nausea, or vomitting.

My husband and I are using the Syntrax Nectar. They come in many flavors (grape, cherry, fuzzy navel, Cappuccino, lemonade and many more). We bought a sample pack and are ordering more of our favorites. They are thin like koolaid and taste pretty darn good -- and I am very picky!

I'm almost 4 days post op and I'm having a very hard time getting enough fluids in. I am supposed to do clear fluids for 2 days and then move to full liquids for 2 weeks. The Protein powders that I had no problem with before taste awful to me now. Every sip is followed by a pain as it enters my stomach.

Protein shakes were also part of clear liquid diet for me as well. I had a terrible time with shakes right after surgery. I had a mini panic attack and went to the store and bought like 8 different brands of Protein Shakes - all were terrible. I couldn't figure out how I was ever going to get my Protein. Ended up doing unflavored Protein powder in Soups and Jello. I was getting 60-70 grams of protein and 64 oz of Fluid by day 4. At about 7 days, the protein shakes started going down better again. I think part of it for me was the dairy. Now 3 weeks post-op, I'm back to drinking Premiere Protein shakes no problem, although some other brands still don't sit well.

As far as tough getting fluids, try different fluids and different temps. Apple juice went down very well for me right after surgery and room-temp Water was much better than cold Water. Its easy to put 1/4 scoop of unflavored protein mix in 6 oz of apple juice to help get both.

Unlike so many others on this sight, my surgeon and NUT go right to stage II pureed/mushy phase. I was a ,bit surprised as well, assumed i would have a liquid phase immediately after. I have reconfirmed this with the surgeons office, I have actually gotten a phone call from PA and surgical coordinator each day to check on me... which was nice. I think I'm gonna be a little safe though and stick with some clears...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
