Weaning off caffeine...

Recommended Posts

I was told at my second nut appointment that I need to wean myself off of caffeine. I love my morning coffee, and I don't like decaf! I tried it, and blah!!

What have you done to wean yourself from coffee? Did you go cold turkey? Or just decreased your intake gradually? Did you suffer any headaches? If so, for how long?

What about half-caff? That's how I began to wean off. Keurig has green mountain brand half caff that aren't too bad. When you're out you can always ask for half regular and half Decaf at coffee shops too.

@mclorrie

I was a huge coffee drinker. My husband and I would experiment with different Beans and then grind our own and cook in an old fashioned perk pot. Getting rid of the caffeine was a major undertaking-- I started really slowly- one scoop of Decaf Beans and the rest not for several days and slowly progressed. It took me a full month and I am so glad I did it that way. I never got a caffeine headache and never felt exhausted. I would also recommend that once you get to decaf you try the Sumatra decaf by Starbucks is pretty good and for the Keurig, the Dark Magic, dark roast decaf is also good if you like a stronger blend. I have also found other brands not too bad if I add an extra scoop of coffee. If you like very mellow coffee, than please ignore the advice above :)

I was a huge caffeine girl. coffee in the am followed by a monster. That was my vice. I stopped two days before surgery cold turkey. Probably not the best plan because then I had horrible headaches. I'm 2 weeks post op now and feel good. I still love the smell of coffee and sniff my friends longingly. Lol. But it's all good. Small sacrifice. I'm allowed coffee 3 months out but I'm thinking why start again.

I'll have to try the Keurig halfcaff! Didn't know it existed! Thanks for your replies!

Thanks!!! I'm gonna have to try that!!

Chile iced coffee Protein reminded me of the international delight powdered coffee that my grandma drank in the late 90's. It wasn't as good as starbucks, but it got the job done. It's definitely not a bad idea to try a sample before you buy a giant tub!

I started my pre-op diet today and it doesn't include caffeine.Today I went cold turkey. Headache, but I know it will go away.

Let me know how you do! If your headache doesn't last long, that's what I'll probably do. Maybe I'll give it up over the weekend, it will give me two days that I'm not working... And I'll be able to deal with a headache, & the sluggishness. When I tried half Decaf & half fully leaded, I almost didn't make it through the day!

I had coffee up until the day before, and started having coffee again a week out. No Decaf, regular coffee. My Dr. said I'm allowed a cup a day, and I enjoy every bit of it! Lol

I drank coffee up to the day before surgery. I stopped when I had to stop all liquids and foods the night before surgery. I figured all the pain medication they would give me post surgery would get me through the withdrawal symptoms and I was correct. Post surgery, it has been just about two years and I am still caffeine free. I still go to Starbucks, I just order everything Decaf :)

sugar-free Rockstar used to be my drink of choice. I could get so much done after one of those!

Then I started having chest pain. The caffeine was causing me to have abnormal heart rhythm.

I switched to crystal light peach tea (which has only a little caffeine) as well as Decaf coffee (and most decaf isn't 100% decaf either).

Now when I have my decaf in the morning, I tell myself it's fully caffeinated, hoping I can fool my brain!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
