14 days to go - getting scared and anxious

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am new to the forum - I am 63 years old and having a gastric sleeve on 16 February 15. I am getting very anxious - trying to do all sorts of things to take my mind off the operation. Are there many over 60's that have had the sleeve and how are you going today. I have been investigating and planning this for about 2 years and made my mind up late last year. I have read a lot of comments from people who have gone through the same emotions but somehow it feels a little better writing it down. I am rambling I know it. I wonder how I will get through the next two weeks on the Optifast preparation regime. I am this size because I have never been the best at sticking to a new regime. I have many supportive friends and family and my husband is so good.

With regard to exercise - how soon do you think most people would be able to go back to the gym - I do go to the gym and plan to use my membership in a better format after the first hurdle has been reach.

Any hints to get over this period will be greatfully received. I would love to hear from you if you are over or under 60.

Hello Sophieteel! I am 62 and my surgery is tomorrow. I have noticed a few other people on this site that are also around or over 60, so you do have company here. The pre-op diet is not too bad after the first three days. You will be fine with it. Good luck in the coming weeks and I hope your surgery goes well and you have an uncomplicated recovery.

@@Sophieteel, lots of people over 60 are having or have had the sleeve! I was sleeved last September and couldn't be doing better! I suggest you check out the forum for folks over 60.

To change your specs, look at the top right hand side of the screen, where there is a disc with scalloped edges. Click on that, then "My Surgery". Next to your height, click on the box labeled "Use Metric."

Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

I am 60 years old and was sleeved on 2/9/2015. I will be 61on the 17th. I am doing well since I was discharged Tuesday evening.

Here are few things to keep in mind to be better prepared while in the hospital:

1. Remember your sleep will be interrupted, once every shift a nursing assistant for blood pressure, temperature, pulse ox. Then the nurse to check incisions and to give pain mess.

2. You will find numerous electrodes foundon your body that were left for you to remove.

3. You will need to get up and use restroom, first with help and then , you are on your own.

4. Walking is enencouraged to help with gas and blood clots.

5. On day of discharge you will be visited by case management, dietitian, and pharmacist.

6. My surgeon saw me 3 times a day during my brief stay.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Best of luck!

Nancy

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
