So I'm am 6 days post op and am having no problems with getting in my Protein or water!! I'm dying for a cup of coffe. Not sure I understand why I can't have coffee? Any help on this would be great! Or has anyone had coffee 6 days out?

They just say stay away from caffeine(coffee)because they think it will be to rough on tummy. I was going crazy w/out mine , I called Dr and he said it was OK to drink as long as I could handle. I had no problems, but every Dr is different

My doctor allows coffee when discharged. Haven't had any issues.

I was cleared for coffee at 6 weeks.

I was told not to drink it while my stomach was healing because coffee has a high acidity content. It takes 4 weeks for the wound to heal. I guess the 2 extra weeks was to be completely sure as some people heal faster then others. I was also told I couldn't have it until I could get the 48 to 64 oz of fluids per day because coffee is a diuretic and dehydrates you. It will be an issue for Constipation.< /p>

By the time I had my first coffee cup a little went a long way. Because you absorb it a lot quicker then prior to surgery you have to go slow. I had a bit of the shakes after a small coffee cup. It felt like I had 4 cups of coffee at once. Now I use a much smaller cup (perhaps a 1/3 of the size of my old favorite mug) I use low fat milk instead of Creamer and stevia. It still tastes delicious. I have a saltine with my multi-Vitamin and the Protonix (omoprozole) first thing in the morning and then make coffee. It will be like 1/2 hour until I drink my cup of coffee. I figure at this point the acid reducer is beginning to work. I don't want to get an ulcer.

ok but what about Decaf? I've never liked coffee but if you love it, try decaf as to not irritate your tummy. at least you'll be getting the taste. I'm actually dying for something (anything caffeinated). but don't drink tea or coffee. nursing school + no caff = zombie lol

It's really interesting how doctors/nut vary on the issue of coffee, isn't it? Some offer in the hospital while some say never again!

I'm changing my opinion. I was told Decaf was okay so,I've been drinking it. Now it looks like I may have an ulcer. Something to think about. I think an antacid is a good idea if your going to partake!! I wasn't put on one.

I had my 2-week post-op appointment on Monday, and based on this thread asked for clarity on whether I had said good-bye to coffee for "forever" or just "for now". I was told that I could have one cup of coffee per day after I have increased my Water consumption to 100oz per day. Since she knows I had been struggling to hit 64oz (most days I get very close or just barely over), and she had just upped my goal to 80oz, it's clear that it'll be a while before coffee and I are reunited. Something to shoot for, even if it feels like I'm about to sprout gills and swim away!

16 days post op and I'm dying for a glass of Merlot... Has anyone drank so soon after surgery? And if so, any complications?

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
