Looking at Mexico

This is my first post to this group. My sister has had a successful gastric sleeve done in July 2014 and has lost over 70 pounds. Back in November, when I had to re-sign up for insurance, the UHC representative assured me that I would have coverage. I scheduled an appointment with my sister's doctor and the day before they called and stated I indeed did not have bariatric coverage. They did offer me the self pay option and at present, I do not have the ability to make 'another' car payment. She mentioned to me that this group has been helpful to her and that others have gone down to Mexico to have surgery. If I have to pay my max out of pocket for the surgery, I might as well see what my options are. So basically, what I am asking is: 1 Is Mexico an option I sure pursue? 2 Is it worth fighting your insurance for coverage? 3 Has anyone had any experience with going to Mexico for treatment? (I have done some basic google searches and there appears to be many, and their patient reviews are interesting???)

Thanks in advance.

Appealing to the insurance company won't do much. They either cover bariatrics or they don't. If they did cover weight loss surgery and you were denied, then an appeal would be suitable.

Lots of people have done self pay and went to MX. I think there are specific forums just for that. Good luck to you!

I had my VSG done in Tijuana, Mexico. Had amazing care there! I went through Mexico Bariatric Center. www.mexicobariatriccenter.com! My surgery was June 2014. I was 286 preop and now I'm 205! My surgeon was Dr. Valenzuela. She was amazing!

I went to Dr. Guillermo Alvarez after reading a ton of reviews. He had the most, all positive. I had an amazing experience! 4 surgeons checked on me throughout the two days I was there. Everything was done for you so all I had to do was show up in San Antonio. Dr. Alvarez is really wonderful.
