Starting over after cancer surgery.

Recommended Posts

After a two year fight with my insurance company, I was banded in December, 2010 by Dr. Jeffery Hunter in Seattle WA. My pre-band weight was 305 lbs and 24 months post-op I was at 185 lbs. After a couple years, I became complacent about my food choices and ultimately gained about 20 Lbs, but I was still exercising and felt good.

In December, 2013, I was diagnosed with low grade prostate cancer, and I decided on sugery as treatment. Because of scar tissue from prior abdominal surgeries, my Dr. ordered a CT scan to determine if robotic surgery was possible.A couple days later, Dr. told me that my first priority was to remove my left kidney because of the large cancer mass on it.

Long story short, my band was deflated in January, 2014, left kidney was removed in March and my prostate removed in November. During that time, I have exercised as much as possible between surgeries, but still have gained over 40 lbs.

Now, I am cancer free and cleared to start the refill process, for which I am thankful, but I have forgotten all I knew about neutrition, portioning, liquids and etc. I really feel like I'm starting new and I would certainly welcome your input and advice.

Thanks...Dan.

Dan, I would just like to say I'm glad you are better and I'm so glad you posted. It probably feels like you're starting all over, but you had great success with your band before, and you will again. My guess is that you would really benefit from a sit down session with the nutritionist. You'll walk away with notes and numbers and a solid plan.

So much of this battle is fought between our ears. Don't ever ever give up on yourself. You beat cancer !! You can do this!!!

Keep posting.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
