There is absolutely nothing wrong with joking about politics, religion, sex, or any other controversial subject.

Really??? Tell that to the NAACP, LULAC, anyone who has been sexually harassed or raped, tell a dead baby joke to a mother whose baby died, tell a joke about supporting the execution of fundamentalists christians to a christian who has known missionaries who were executed for their beliefs, tell a gay bashing joke to a father whose son was a victim of a hate crime. Come on... you don't really believe that??? But then maybe youre beliefs are that shallow.

Regarding my "kill the Christians" post, as you call it, I had no intention at all of having people "rise" to any "bait.".......... If you read more to it than that you are absolutely wrong.

I don't mind if you call me tactless. Just understand that my lack of tact is not a matter of unawareness or a lack of understanding of what I am doing. That is not what is going on here. When I push buttons and say things that tend to challenge people or even offend them on occasion, it is always quite deliberate

Spout off what ever makes you "right" and the other person "wrong" depending on the most recent discussion. Some people always have to be right. It is a sign of fear and insecurity most of the time. what happened to people being responsible for their actions. An eye for an eye. If they kill they should be killed. Why should they get to live on? They took someones life!

Obviously a lot of people agree with you. But for me the question for me is not whether or not "an eye for an eye" is fair treatment for the criminal. I'm sure it is fair treatment for the criminal in those particularly terrible crimes where they apply the death penalty. The question for me is whether we, as a society, want to stoop to that level in our response. The issue for me is whether you and I are worth more than that.

Most countries in the world have reached the conclusion that executing a human being is just too low to stoop as a society, regardless of whether the criminal deserves it. I'd rather stand with the majority of Western democracies on this point, rather than stand with those who still apply the death penalty, like China, North Korea, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

I disagre with the death penalty. Killing another person doesn't solve anything. It doesn't bring back the person who was murdered. It doesn't bring "closure" (IMHO) because the family and friends will still think about the victim and the murderer probably every day. It is only "vengence" or "revenge" as far as I am concerned. Besides that, the execution only makes more victims.. the loved ones of the executed. Maybe it is the nurse in me, but I always feel compassion for those about to be executed. And especially for their family. How awful it must be to know your loved one is about to die. Knowing the exact day and time they will die must be horrible. Never mind having to be there and watch it. It is just horrible. I should also clarify that I have never been affected by murder personally. I am friends with the father of Darrant Williams of the Denver Broncos who was murdered on Jan 1st but that is as close as I have been to it. I don't know what I would feel in my heart if anyone I loved was murdered. I might want to kill the murderer myself.. I just don't know...

Ah but wait a minute. Shouldn't that apply to society? Just because we're a large mass of people, it doesn't absolve us of the responsibility for killing another human being. It does only in some people's minds. The ones who've decided that if a person kills that we should kill them back in revenge. Makes sense. Not.

It makes us killers.

Though I can understand where you are coming from the truth is that this is a complicated issue. There certainly is the emotional dimension and that is the one which provokes the kill response in so many of us, including myself, to be quite honest with you. The first response of most of us when confronted with heinous deeds is to have the perpetrators of these deeds put down just as we would put down a rabid or defective animal. And, to tell you the truth, there is a part of me which is powerfully sympathetic to this approach. Indeed, there is a part of me which does not understand why the American legal system will spare the criminally insane for these folks really are the truly rabid animals of human society in that they are not individuals who can be rehabilitated. It is simply not cost effective to keep those folks around: they are unfixable.

This assessment may sound harsh and it is. Another truth is that those countries which have the strictest gun controls do have the lowest levels of lethal crime. Still another truth is that the death penalty is not a deterant to violent crime. Yet another truth is that America is the only civilized country which santions the death penalty. The rest of the countries which do routinely sanction the killing of their own citizens are third world countries pwned by despots.

Certainly this business of justice, retribution, and rehabilitation is a toughie. Nevertheless, it is quite obvious that your approach to law and order is not working. Life is easier, I guess, for folks like us Canucks. We are a minor power and whenever we have problems we are entirely comfortable with striking up an inquiry or a royal commission or whatever in order to review the issue. Though these efforts are often futile they are an acknowledgement to us that life is very complicated and that no one single agency is able to solve our problems on its own.

And this brings me back to this biz of the death penalty. Of course it is human nature to desire to want to kill those individuals who commit grotesque and monstrous crimes. I suspect that I am a little different from some of you when I say that I figure that it is those individuals who are deemed the least redeemable under law who should be the most logical targets.

Indeed the only real reason why I am against the death penalty and do believe that all civilized folks should be against it is because I have got a queasy feeling (after reading various versions of global statistics) that it takes two to tango. Some societies have a much, much higher rate of violence than others. It would be far more productive to examine the paradigms of one's society, wouldn't it?

Yes Green, I am sure that indeed it would. But even if we had a group consisting of extremely knowledable people to examine the issue, the current administration would not listen to their recommendations. At least that's their track record on many issues to date.

Life is easier, I guess, for folks like us Canucks. We are a minor power and whenever we have problems we are entirely comfortable with striking up an inquiry or a royal commission or whatever in order to review the issue.

Green, I wonder if you remember Iona Campagnolo, member of parliament for northern BC in the '70's, (currently BC's lieutenant governor). We were in her riding when we were doing our back to the land thing up north.

She sent out forms to all her constituants, asking our opinion on the death penalty and whether we thought it should be part of the Canadian legal system.

I filled in the "no" box and then proceeded to fill up the given space with my reasons. It wasn't long before I received form letter reply stating that she appreciated my input, however, she believed people elected her to exercise her conscience and not be "just a weather vane for popular opinion".

WTF????? I wondered why she even bothered to ask.

I think the death penalty should be abolished simply because it's too easy a way out. Why should the offender get to die when he should live with the consequences of his actions?
