Disappointed and Hiatal Hernia

Recommended Posts

Not to be repetitive, but I had a hiatal hernia that was discovered pre-op and it was fixed during my sleeve surgery. I hope you can sort everything out with your doctor!

Good news today, I got a surgery date! I was already to give up a couple of weeks ago. After my EDG? When they found a hiatal hernia my husband said the doc recommended the bypass. I went in today already to say "no bypass" and no surgery. Well it went better than I expected, we started chatting about the sleeve. I probably should have questioned the change but wasn't sure what to do. I think that my next visit I should address this just to make sure.

So in 2 months my journey begins! I'm excited and scared all at the same time.

I didn't know that I had the hernia until I came out of the op and dr advised he fixed it while in there- no big deal from his perspective.

Me too.

Thought I'd give an update from my original post " disappointed and hiatal hernia" my sleeve surgery was on March 3rd. The hiatal hernia was smaller than anticipated and all went well. The 5 little incisions are almost painless and no bruising. The only nagging pain was from the co2 they fill you with. My left shoulder was a constant nagging pain for 7 days. I think that my main complaint is....... I now hate the sweet protien shakes! How will I make it another 2 weeks before the next phase?

Hiatal hernias are caused when a section of the stomach is pushed through the opening where the esophagus comes down through the diaphragm. They have to bring that section back down and close the enlarged opening. I had bad acid reflux prior to my sleeve but nothing since. Fixed my acid reflux.

I had gastric sleeve and a fixed hiatal hernia as well, but I have more gastric reflux than before. I've lost 80 pounds so far and seem to have plateaued. My goal is about 30 pound away. Not sure I will make it as my willpower is as weak as before. The only difference now is that my pouch stops me when I over eat.

So yesterday I had the EDG (scope) as I'm progressing towards surgery. My preference is the gastric sleeve, well they found a Hiatal Hernia :-( So now the option is gastric bypass. I'm not wanting to go that route at all ! I don't know what to do now. I have a follow up appointment in two weeks.

Has anyone had a Hiatal Hernia and still was able to have VSG?

Hello, I had the endoscopy and no hernia, I'm scheduled for Jan 31. My doctor told me that if I had a hernia he would fix it as he does the sleeve. Good luck!

I don't know why the doc told my husband (I was in recovery) that the bypass was what he recommended. I hope that on my visit with him I can find out why. After all this time of jumping through hoops, going to support groups for 5 months, having all kinds of tests done, getting over my fears I really hope that I can have the sleeve. If not I'm afraid that I will have the problem fixed and not do anything more. I hope thats not the case. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It could be the amount of weight you are or something he saw with your stomach. I would ask him specifically why. I asked my Dr right before the endoscopy why didn't he want to do a bypass on me and he said he wouldn't only the sleeve. I have about 100 lbs to lose. Maybe a bit more if I'm lucky.

Hi, I'm scheduled to be sleeved 1/27 and it was discovered that I have a Hiatal Hernia about 4cm and my surgeon said it was no big deal and that he would repair hernia during sleeve surgery... I hope this information helps some.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
