C - I've studied fueling for endurance events a LOT, and there are different schools of thought, of course. Then you factor in the band, and it gets REALLY interesting! LOL

So far, I have a 30 mile ride on April 5th, a 150+ mile ride May 3rd & 4th, and a 100 mile ride in August. I have an eating plan for the two weeks prior to the May and August events, and I have a plan for the events themselves. I won't use a pre-event diet for the April ride, but will use the same plan always for the event days.

A lot depends on the conditions you will be riding in. Heat is a HUGE factor here, of course. Oregon may have it's own challenges, but you should really have almost ideal conditions most of the year, I think! (Lucky dog!) No matter what, though, fueling is extremely important.

A company I have learned much from is Hammer Nutrition - Fuel Right. Feel Great! - Home. If you get on their mailing list, they will send you all sorts of fantastic information. They really give you a LOT of info, so it can get really confusing if you let it. I would prefer too much than not enough though.

Email me if you have any questions on this and I'd be glad to help if I can! I can give you more details that way, if you like.

TX: Thank you so much for that info!

I too believe that there are different requirements for these rides. I don't really think my surgeon understands the kind of riding we like to do. I think he thinks it's a little ride around the neighborhood. Your body has different demands when you ride these bigger rides and it's important to re-fuel. I just want to make sure I do it right, without adding unnecessary calories/fat.

Good for you that you are so good at the planning! Your rides sound cool!

NEWS ALERT!!!!

HP HAS BROKE IN HER NEW PEDALS AND SHOES BY FALLIN ON HER ASS!!!!!!!

Yes as graceful as I knew it was going to be, I knew I was going down, could not stop, and on my butt I went.....I am glad I was laughing....But I was so excited because I have bruises and BLOOD to show for it!!!! WOHOOOOO!!!! I know sick...but it was good...now I know what it feels like and know not to do that again!!!

Made a huge mistake though! Did not grab my helmet since it was just going to be a short ride.....Never again will I leave the house without it. If I would of not caught myself...I would of smacked my head on the ground.....But I have good landing gear

So, we got in 11.2 miles tonight......learned some tricks on the bike. Gearing is different from my Trek, but I love it. The handlebars are defiantly better than my other bike.....and I believe I will get allot of workouts done on this bike. Still have my eyes on an expensive Road bike for next year.....my piggy bank needs to start getting filled daily.

Anyway. I will post my new picture soon.....I wore a huge t-shirt.....wish I would not of done that....but oh well......I am still prett y self concious in my bike pants....LOL

ZZ....SOOOO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR DAY.....AT LEAST YOUR BIKE IS GETTING FIXED...AND IT IS NOT COSTING YOU AN ARM AND A LEG.......

What BG said.

I run colder now than I used to when I was heavier, but I'm not always COLD. I think I'm more regular now and before I was always hot.

I too eat more than the typical bandster, but I exercise more than one too. Well all of us here do, that's why we are in the exercise forum. And cycling is a huge calorie burner. But this is where know what you burn per hour (or guessing really well) and what you eat come into play.

You can go super low calorie and not die while exercising, you do have fat stores to live off of, but that seems like misery that's not neccessary to get to your goals. Eat fewer calories than you burn and you will lose.

Last year I went to my doctor in a panic about the enormous amounts of food I was eating. The example I gave was 3 full ounces of grilled chicken, 1/4 cup of rice and three broccoli spears...all of it was able to go in and I WANTED it all. And then a few hours later I was able to eat a banana and 6 ounces of yogurt and OMG, I was going to burst my pouch...he told me to calm the fuck down. Okay, not his words, but he said you're paranoid, you are losing 10# a month and your body needs that nurtrition.

He cautioned me against filling myself with easy fattening foods, but it made sense that I was hungrier and that if I wasn't hurting when I ate I was fine.

C, I hate to say it but you're going to have filter what your doc and his people tell you and apply some group knowledge gathered on sites like LBT.

ZZ

Car trouble stinks. But I love how your recognize the irony of both modes being out at the same time. Cute.

TX

Cool about fueling. I might need to learn more...Seems like there's always something new to learn. Most times that's exciting. Now with school it's exhausting...but I'm saving those links you posted!

HP

You're a riot! Blood to show for it! Funny, but I can appreciate a nice scrape or something that proves I'm a tough chica who got it doing something athletic. Not like a cut from shaving my legs.

W,

New fill? Awesome.

BG,

Did you ride today? I wanted to but the piles of melting snow don't instill the feeling of riding weather. Also time is tight on Kiddo night.

XO

Daddy - Yeah.... he is gimpy (long story, but basically think of the braces that Forrest Gump had to wear on his legs - thats what my roomie gots) and he can't drive. Lol

BG - TRUE! I can't wait to get the bike back tomorrow, and have a Water bottle on it. Lol. I'm going to have the guy show me EXACTLY how to make the gears work too. Lol. I admit - the bike shop smelled great (newness, rubber... Lol) and there were tons of super hot bikes. It was like going into an expensive cnady store. Damnit!

As for being cold - I find myself cold alot more often now. People at work insist I just need to eat a steak. Lol. WHat is it with people being so mad when you decide to go vegetarian!? BG, do you have backlash from the meat-eaters in your life? Haha. Anyway, yeah, they think I'm anemic now. Whatever. I'm just COLD cause I am missing 92 pounds of FAT insulation that I used to have!

Yeah J, I left the house with 2 modes of transport and came home by foot... my neighbors were confused as hell when I walked up to the apt. Haha.

J: I agree! That's why I'm asking all of you!

I think I've got a situation like many of LBT'ers with most offices focusing on RNY over LB. I think my doctor is great, but there is a language/culteral barrier that might be causing us a little difficulty in FULL communication. I think he just doesn't understand what I am asking. At some point, he and I will get this sorted out. It sounds like you and your doctor have a good relationship. I'm worried about getting to a point where I would eat a lot too. They scared me to death with the whole stretching out the pouch thing!!!

Well, hopefully I will at least feel 'normal' in the temperature department!

C - my best friend in Houston is going through her lap Band process right now... she just set up her psych and nut appts... still has to do a 3 month diet, etc... anyway... she is having LOTS of trouble with people at her work and so called 'friends' and her mom telling her all about what she 'should' do, etc. I told her that if she had any questions to just ask me (Lol, cause I know it all!) or to come HERE to LBT!!

People have too many opinions, and feel the need to interject them upon you at all times. Even the docs and such. Thank goodness my doc ONLY does lap band!!

HP: You look great! Cool bike too! Your smile says it all!

ZZ: You are too much! Hats off to you! Kudos for all your determination this week! LOL

BG/ZZ: Isn't it strange that ppl have so much energy and free time to worry about what everyone else is doing? I mean, if you don't want to eat meat, so what? That's got to be frustrating!

ZZ: I think that would be a perk to have a doc specialized in LB. My family has been supportive, but one said, "hmmm, we'll have to see how well it works". NICE!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
