Hey so im a week post opp and I'm not physically hungry at all it's actually kind of hard for me to even have oatmeal or cream of wheat. I really can only tolerate Water and soy milk. But I'm struggling with head Hunger i find myself thinking about food! Especially some foods i know i won't be able to have in the future. Has anybody else gone through something similar and does it get better?

And im in my 3rd week now, it hasn't gotten better but ive learned to manage it better

Thanks for the reply im only in my first week post opp but i feel like it's been forever cause i was on Optifast for 3 weeks prior to surgery. And like i said I'm not physically hungry, and I've gotten some yummy yogurts too but i think my issue is with savory food as i feel like I've been having sweet things for a month now and would love something with salt lol but today i found i Tomato Soup that went well with me and kinda helped the savory need.

I personally feel like it gets better but it is that savory itch that I think gets the best of us. I remember being able to have my first real bite of savory foods after the puréed stage. For me, I did not do well on that stage and lived on yogurt and cottage cheese so I ended up waiting unting soft food stage before I really went to savory foods. I did pass for me although you will probably find your tastes change and what you think will taste delicious might not. It is all trial and error. Good luck.

I am almost at 2 days shy of two weeks and I am very head hungry I go to sleep thinking about food and wake up still thinking about food!! So last night I went out and bought cottage cheese and yogurts and refried beans!! When I got home I decided I would have cottage cheese and that helped!! I just needed to chew food!!!

I read somewhere on this site about watching cooking shows and that was suppose to help with the head hunger. So I did watch them and it worked for me. It didn't bother me. It might not work for some people but it did help. I wasn't craving or anything. It was a weird suggestion but it helped.

I did the same thing. There have actually been times when I have struggled to want to eat at all. Sometimes watching the food network has helped me actually eat what I need to. I have not had issues at all with cravings which is very strange.

Funny thing I've never heard that. Also i was watching the food network and my family freaked out and told me to stop watching it cause it would be like torturing myself

I feel a strong desire for the foods I used to eat and kind of sad to give up my food binges and being able to have pig outs or just eat to escape etc. I definitely keep thinking of food more than I thought I would. By I am assuming (being only a few days post surgery) that it takes some time to forget those habits and replace them with new ones. And there is NO WAY I could eat much of anything right now. I manage to get down 4 tblsp of yogurt this morning and I feel like I am going to burst and can't even face the Water I need to drink. It's like having a shackle over my stomach.

I think over time one forgets. I hope! I keep craving spicy food not surprising that is my favorite

It's just a tough choice but it's one we make for our health. I really love food and it's sad to give it up but I keep reminding myself over time that we can have foods we like in smaller portions.

Well a lot of events are around food and we used to eat when we were happy or sad. Now we eat to live. You will get to have your favorite foods, except fried, but just in little portions. I think everyone gets the buyers remorse after surgery. But it gets better. I have no regrets even with the hard days.

And yes food network helps! I watch it and i am still on track and eating what I'm suppose too. My family freaked out as well. But now they get it.

I was helped with head hunger by drinking chicken broth, or Unjury chicken Protein Powder Soup. Also, wait 45 min until you drink something after eating. That prolonged the feeling of feeling full for me. Brush your teeth, and take a walk too. I felt hungry for 4 weeks after surgery, but it does get better.

I also noticed that I cannot stand the smell or taste of fried or sweet foods anyway. I am so darn happy about that! It does not appeal to me in the least. The hardest thing for me to deal with has been I just have wanted a darn sandwich. I am allowed to have bread if I wanted it but it fills you up terribly and makes u feel like crap anyway so I have learned to use fruit or if I must a cracker. I love a piece of apple with cheese on it! Great snack.< /p>

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
