I just got a small Decaf cause I was dying!!! I ended up doing 8 oz of coffee and 4 ounces of milk in the 12 oz cup. It's a snack with protein!

I went back to coffee at 4 weeks out. I told my nut and doc on my 1 mth follow-up that I had a cup that day and was afraid I messed up. They both said that I can have it whenever I wanted it with not problem, it wont hurt me, just don't add sugar. I add creamer...reg Creamer and that was okayed... to it and the nut said it was just fine because I get 1 gram of Protein per tbsp. I usually have 1 or 2 cups in the morning and about 2 or 3 times a week I have a cup in the evenings. No harm done. Its my only vice now! I know there are a million opinions on this subject....just sharing my experience. The 4 weeks I went without coffee was the hardest thing to do thru this whole adventure! I could have only given it up if the doctor yelled at me! lol

Initially I followed instructions and either drank Decaf or tea. I don't drink coffee everyday so I wasn't jonesing for the caffeine, but I do like an occasional cup. At 6 weeks I bought a cup and mixed about 2 ounce with my Protein Drink. I got that coffee taste without it interfering with my Protein and liquids. I have yet to drink a full cup of coffee but I've been doing that every so often. It probably takes me 4 or 5 days to drink a medium coffee. So far I've had no issues with heartburn or reflux.

Yes, you can according to my doctor if you drink Decaf. I have a cup (8 oz) a week about three times per week.

I stuck to Decaf for a couple months. Today I'll have 1 cup in the morning with a scoop of chocolate or vanilla whey shaken in. Makes a yummy latte. If I want more coffee I use decaf. I was SO addicted before, (diet coke was my 'water'. It took me 6 months to wean off. I never want to be that addicted to anything again! Plus, a lesser known side effect of caffeine is that it leeches the Calcium from our systems. Sleevers already have to take extra since we are somewhat malabsorbed (not like a R\Y, but calcium deficiency IS a thing for us too). I need to keep all the calcium I ingest!

My Dr. Says i can have coffee as tolerated when I'm back to regular eating. Right now it can be regular *decaf* coffee, no sugar or milk.

Umm..excuse me french but - WTH? ? I mean, I know I'm probably the only person from Israel in this forum and maybe things here are a bit different but after 3 days of Clear Liquids we're allowed to have coffee. With milk. And sugar. And please don't think of Israel as 'camels walkin on the street' kinda country, gastric sleeve ops are VERY common here. So maybe you can explain? Never herd about it before.

Thanks :)

@@jasminnegrin - responses have varied from doctor to doctor, but from what I can tell it's more a US thing. Another poster from the UK also said she had never heard of this.

I just read an article that said if you have acid reflux issues then avoid coffee and caffeine products. If you don't then its ok to enjoy coffee in moderation. The article also said that coffee and caffeine are just 2 of many things that can upset the stomachs or cause reflux issues in bariatric patients, whether its the sleeve or bypass. The main problem being that coffee...caffeinated or decaffeinated...increases acid production. But....these studies have not been able to say definitively that coffee is "good" or "bad". That's why bariatric surgeons are so different when it comes to this subject.

Unfortunately coffee does not taste the same for me and it makes my sleeve comfortable.

So the two of those together and I have given it up. I love the aroma and wish I could enjoy a cup.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
