I have been T1 for 37 years and as I get older, the weight was more challenging to get off so the scale was climbing. I had my surgery (gastric-bypass) 12/1 and so far I've lost 30lbs and have drastically reduced the amount of insulin I take. I can't speak to getting rid of diabetes because my pancreas doesn't work. My A1C use to average 8 in the past 20+ years and my recent A1C was 6.4!!! I will tell you to take things slowly and monitor your glucose like you've never done before. Best of luck on your journey!

Wow, so I have been on Insulin for 25 years and we share the same Gastric by pass Day! I also had mine done on 12 Jan, I'm having tons of hypo's and adjusting my insulin pump daily! I had a bad complication after the op and had ketoacidosis, was really scary, spent 7 days in ICU! Still in hospital now and just starting to hold down liquids without an IV bag! So feeling much improved, you sound like it's going really well for you! So happy for you, I'm sure I'll be following in your footsteps soon ...

Dyros -

I have not had many lows. I worked with my entire care team and specifically my endocrinologist. We had a plan in place and I'm blessed it worked! I went to 50% basal and 1:10 bolus on my pump. Of the two low's I've had, I have been using "glucose shots" by Dex.....liquid and easy to get down.

I hope you are doing well...take it easy and try not to get frustrated. I had my surgery 12/1/14 and I still have days where I have an ache/pain or feel nauseous....one day at a time :)

I have PCOS, had gestational diabetes, and now am diabetic. I've been on metformin for years for the PCOS and stayed on it to help with diabetes. My fasting sugar has always been super high (~170s), even though it comes down to a normal range during the day. When I left the hospital after surgery, my doctor told me to stop the metformin. My fasting numbers for the last 3 weeks have been in the 110s!! That's without any medicine at all.

Me: Hey Siri, Is it raining outside? (for my morning walks with the dogs)
Siri: I don't think it's raining at the moment.
Wet Dogs: Then why are we wet? This damn Siri person is more stupid than we are.

I received my nutrition book and checklist today! I am so very excited (and a tad bit scared too) Each day this is becoming a reality!
I created a new blog post about how BRAVE we all are for doing this. Because I think we are! Most of us know the horrors of people calling us nasty names, saying we can't control ourselves, we are easy targets for people's verbal attacks! But I feel we are BRAVE because we are taking control over our lives and creating a new world of happiness.
