Size 6 and still "overweight" ?

Recommended Posts

I am one year out today (yay me) and have gone from a size 20 to a size 6 and yet according to my BMI I am still overweight... My original goal was 140 lbs, but at this point I think I would actually look too skinny, so I am altering my, as yet reached, goal to a normal BMI range. If I was in the middle of my normal range I think I would look emaciated, so I'll settle for just reaching the normal range.

That is amazing!! Congratulations!! I think the overall BMI is just crazy anyway. for 5'9 they say I should be 160, I can't imagine that could ever be possible. I think at the peak of my fitness in high school I was 145 so I can't imagine after having 2 kids that I could get to that size again. I am going to ask my doc what she thinks my BMI should be or ending weight goal should be, I think I would be happy around 180 to have a healthy look and not look too skinny...I will keep working though I still have a bundle to go but down 99.5 already!! this is amazing!

Do you strength train? Might be time to start putting on some muscle. :-)

Remember you have a lot of muscle that you used to carry around all the fat you had to carry pre sleeve! I don't look at BMI, I look at my size and how I move and do I feel comfortable. I know for me I am a size 8-10 bottoms and 6-8 top at 160 lbs and 5'5" and in that range I am all good in the hood.

How do you feel?

I'm 5"6 and cannot remember being a 6! Ever. 6th grade I was in woman's 3 then highschool a 10 even though I weighed 136. I had booty and gymnast muscles but I will happily wait for that size 6. I have faith that I will!

I'm with you. The BMI number is crazy. There are too many factors that go into it. My daughter's Tae Kwon Do instructor is 5'7" and 160 pounds and BMI says she's overweight. There's NO WAY! She's nothing but solid muscle. So, in my opinion, get to where you feel good. If you're happy at a size 6, then go with it. If you want more room in an 8, that's fine too. If you want to try for a size 4, try it. If you feel emaciated it's probably not the right weight for you.

Bottom line, do you feel good? It sounds like you do. So good for you! That's really all that matters.

Our stats are similar and I'm amazed that you can get into a size 6! You go. I'm a size 10 loose. Everyone tells me not to lose anymore weight and I am happy with where I am and how I look but I can't get over the "overweight" status. I am obsessed with my medical chart not showing overweight.

Size 6 isn't what it used to be... I was a size 6 in high school and I was a lot smaller than I am now, but I was in much better shape too... I'm about 5'5 tall and I would just really love to have something in my life declare me "NORMAL"... lol

Just the medias way of screwing with you. I heard today about a size 8 model who was told she's too fat to model, they want her to lose 15 lbs. ridiculous what society DEMANDS is normal!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
