About the sugar thing.... I am not quite 8 weeks out from my surgery. I have not tried sugar; nor have I experience dumping. I think about trying sugar, but I think I am more afraid that I will not have a reaction to sugar than I am afraid that I will DUMP.

I could really do a number on myself with thoughts about food I am not eating. I am good with Protein and a few veggies. I have had a half piece of toast (whole wheat) twice. I would rather have Protein nourishment than bread. I was using bread for almond butter. To the person who suggested using a spoon, when someone asked about what to eat with their cheese, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

As things progress, I can see how easy it would be to fall back into old habits. I want this to wok, and I get it that I have to be the one who makes it work. Making the right choices is my responsibility.

I am having a really hard time with Constipation. I'm going to start a thread.

@wildGoose. I am having a hard time with Constipation. If something works for you, please share. I am taking Peri- Colace once per day in the evening but it's not enough. I was told to do a Miralax every morning too. What did your doctor advise? I find they don't give it the proper attention. I finally told them I was going to require surgery to a different part of my body if this didn't get resolved. I have used Fleet enemas for the first time in my life out of desperation. Not fun! I have been going once per week which is not enough.

50 pounds, gone! HURRAY!

Now, wasn't that easy, lol.

On my attempt to eat more because I was told by my NUT that I needed to bump up my calorie intake, I have decided to add milk (2% Lactaid for me but I am going to start regular milk) to my herbal tea. Part of the reason I don't eat more is because I start burping when I eat or drink. Who wants that! I still don't know why I burp like crazy but I think it is my body's version of nausea, sort of. But to make a long story short my Nut was thinking perhaps fat was my trigger food. I kind of doubt it because I eat super low fat. To test and see if she was correct, I decided to try pizza last night. I ate the tops (not crust) of three slices of a medium pizza. It was a "The works" and what do you know, my tummy has never been so happy in it's entire new life. I didn't burp once. Turns out eating healthy is bad for me. I need more grease and junk in my life. Isn't that the weirdest thing?

I just saw these and what a great idea it would be to make any sort of "meatloaf" or "meatball" recipe this way and freeze them for when we need something to eat in a hurry. They would travel well to work or shopping too because they would be frozen and defrost just in lime for lunch. Any flavor possible, with veggies included and a perfect portion. I wonder if they would work with paper muffin liners for an even more convenient meal.

Isn't it funny Beni? I've actually had to add more fat in my diet. I was so terrified that I hardly ate any and your body really needs it. Such a balance. As my doctor says "everyone is different, if you try something out of the ordinary and still lose who am I to say it's wrong for you" - keep in mind this is within reason but it's really allowed me to settle down and tame my anxiety.

I totally afree with amylynns. I feel like we eat to survive now too. Don't get me wrong, there are some things I do enjoy eating, but most of the time it is a chore. I don't feel like eating, but I know I have to. I went to the mall today and it was crazy busy. I only had a banana in the morning and I felt like I was going to pass out. But I wasn't hungry at all. I stopped into Vitamin World and bought a Quest Bar to hold me over and give me some Protein. It's such a pain :(

Tonight with my bf, he kept asking me what I wanted to eat. I'm like I don't know. He gets all pissy cuz he says I never know. I tried to explain to him that I really have to "desire" for anything, I don't have a nagging hunger like I used to, so he really can't get mad at me for that. Ayyy yi yi!

@Luna222:

I don't know, so I'm asking. Would it help your bf to read all the stuff about this on bariatricpal?

For example, I had my RNY in December last year. My wife saw what I went through. The worst of it was:

Dumping syndrome, where all I can do is endure the EXTREME NAUSEA, cold sweats, and thinking I'm going to have MAJOR DIARRHEA OR VOMITING OR BOTH!

And the UNBELIEVABLE POUCH PAIN from eating just a tiny bit more than 1/4 cup. NOTHING can save you from that PAIN! And if you make the mistake of drinking Water, to help the food pass, like I have, all that does is make the pain WORSE, because now you have the pressure of the quarter cup of food AND the Water you foolishly drank! Then I tried to vomit up the quarter cup of food and the water, and all that comes up is about a teaspoon of saliva! I end up having to endure the pain until it passes. Talk about hating life!

So my wife could only watch and wonder at my suffering. (Regardless what others think, this is definitely NOT the easy way to lose weight!)

But I turned her on to bariatric pal, to help her understand that it wasn't only me going through this stuff. And partly because she was going to have bariatric surgery too. Last month, just before Thanksgiving, she had gastric sleeve surgery.

While she still can't relate to the pouch pain of an RNY patient, she's already had dumping syndrome! And there's no better teacher than experience!

Anyway, I hope at least some of this helps you with your boyfriend.

@@dc0520 Isn't hilarious, I'm not eating enough. Dang, that never happened to me before. Turns out I listen to my Nut's protocol. I ate what was on her list. But I must say, I am still amazed at my pizza meal last night. I was so worried was was going to get sick as a dog with the pizza. But nope. In fact I was fine and this morning I had my first normal BM.

I struggle getting in enough but when I do I drop weight with no issue. Today I'm eating chicken noodle Soup homemade minus the noodles lol oh the joys. I have the flu and like others said it's miserable trying to eat when sick. I was 201 this morning though. Here's to hoping for onederland soon!

@@Beni I had to add some fat to my diet too and when I started that, I've been having normal bowel movements every day. I've never been more excited to go in my life lol. But honestly, I think it is a balance. It's just what my body needs I guess. It's all about learning now. I tried a little bit of new England clam chowder last night and it was OK for a little bit but then I just felt nauseous and my heart started racing. I kind of forced myself to sleep, and avoided going to the bathroom. I feel like when I go in the bathroom, it's like my mind and my body "think" they have to throw up or go to the bathroom. And then I start dry heaving and I'm in there for 30 min. sleeping Def helped! I'm not sure if I just ate too much of it or if it was too heavy. Who knows. But it sure was yummy!

@@Beni, I too have suffered from Constipation. It sucks!! I used colace/abt 4 a day with average results. Miralax was a joke.. what works for me pre/post surgery are fish oil pills and chia/flaxseed powder. I put that in my Soups, eggs, ground turkey, etc

itd tasteless, and will most probably give you outstanding results! And not to mention the health benefits.

@ joankrie

I will try the fish oil and the flaxseed powder. I am so glad you said Colace and Miralax were a joke because that was my experience as well. I was beginning to think I had the worst GI track and not even the prescribed meds worked. I do think getting ahead of it is key. A preventive approach is where I'm at. I feel like I was in such trouble because it wasn't taken seriously early on. Oh, Constipation is very common, kind of jazz. Well, yes but should I go to the emergency room or should I perform my own surgery? At one point, I drank 2 bottles of Magnesium Citrate (horrid stuff) and still nothing happened for 24 hours.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
