Buying new sized clothes.....

Recommended Posts

So I am one that hasn't kept any of my old sizes in my closet. I am getting ready to return to work next week. I have tried my "Work" clothes on and not much fitting. It is a wonderful thing but don't know how I feel about getting different sizes now. I went to "clothes mentor" I had some really nice clothes I wanted to trade for other clothes. I gave them a bag with 6 tops and skirt suit and a light weight swede jacket with shirt to match. They came back with a $4.00 offer for the jacket only! What are you crazy??? I took the jacket and the rest of the clothes back home. All of this took 45 minutes to tell me. I shopped around. I shouldn't have done it but just found a couple things I liked. It was a very discouraging first trip to find different clothes. I had a really nice sales person try and help me and she brought me 2 sizes up from what I was wearing before surgery. No way am I buying something larger after losing 74 lbs.! Thanks for letting me vent! Anyone else had negative experience with shopping after surgery?

Clothes are really a tough thing in this process. I do know a lot of people go to thrift stores during the transition. I didn't go that route. I bought a few skirts and dresses with elastic that would work for a while. So what if I have to wear the same 5 outfits. Who cares. I made sure everything was on sale. Tried to be reasonable. It's hard to know what size will last and how your body will adjust in certain places.

I'm on my last 10-15 pounds so my closet is getting more full. Now that it's getting cold I had to buy pants. I bought stretchy jeans in several colors from costco for $15. I'm a 12 now (from a 22) and honestly even with a few more pounds gone I don't see my stomach fitting into anything smaller. I hope I'm safe at least for the winter. And if not, I will be wearing bagging jeans and a belt!

Yeah, I agree. The thrift shop and sams club is where I've been shopping so far for clothes during my weight loss. At sams they have those hidden elastic waistbands in their dress slacks that work pretty well, I'll buy a size down from what I'm actually at and they will fit fine for me. At the thrift shop I've bought a few dress shirts for a few bucks each. The thrift shop will probably get alot of business from me over the next year, both donations and purchases. But all in all I'm not complaining!

My bariatric support group has a clothing exchange so I'm doing that and will be going to thrift stores also.

I am two months out and have lost sixty pounds, this includes the twenty pre-op. I am down to hardly no clothes and what I do have are getting too big. I have been scouring the thrift stores almost weekly. It takes time because sometimes sizes are mixed, but worth it. I know I won't be in these long so the price can't be beat. I did hit the mall today and found some really good sales so I did splurge...a little. If I find something I really like even though it is a smaller size, I get it. I know it will fit soon. I am so pleased with my loss so far but shopping for clothes right now is not enjoyable for me. It is a chore. I know I will eventually hit my goal and it will be more fun.

Careful! I thought that at size 10 and made some investments in nice things I cannot wear as I am now a six and sometimes a four!

I never thought I would do the goodwill thing....but I find amazing stuff there! Like new designer stuff for $3-7 a piece!

Ross and marshals and TJ Maxx are all good too. And dress clips (or mitten clips work too) to cinch in the backs of things that are too big!

I went to old navy got a couple things. Work clothes I got two slacks and one skirt for now. This will do.

All my larger stuff is on eBay. And seems to be leaving the house at a steady pace. I've made about $300 so far

Paid off a small balance card and deposited the rest so I can go shopping

All I can say is thank goodness for Goodwill! I have been able to go through my shrinking dress sizes one by one with very little cost for me. I am retired so jeans and casual clothes are plentiful there and very cheap. I have bought a few things as a treat once I get into a new size but honestly with the change is sizes happening so quickly I am thankful for the thrift shops.

It has been interesting journey with clothes. I got rid of a lot of clothes in closet in the BIG sizes I never want to wear again and donated to someone who needed them. I have shopped at consignment stores, yard sales of people I knew and outlet stores on the sale rack. I can't wait till I meet goal weight and my Hubby has promised me a new wardrobe and that great motivation!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
