Vitamin D and Iron deficient.

Recommended Posts

I just got my lab work back and found out I am Vitamin D and Iron deficient. I have always been on the low side for iron, but this is the first time I have heard about the Vitamin d. All I have to do is get a letter from my PCP approving my for surgery before I can submit to insurance. I was hoping to have surgery next month. Will my deficiencies put it on hold? They didn't tell me how low I was, but I have started Bariatric Advantage multi, iron, and my surgeon just prescribed the vitamin D. Anyone have this happen to them? How long did it take to get your levels ready for surgery? Thanks. :)

I'm currently on Rx grade Vitamin D. I asked the same about it delaying my surgery and my patient advocate said that it wouldn't. I'll be on a non-Rx supplement once I finish this bottle.

I've been on RX Vitamin D2 50,000 iu's once a week for quite a while. I began taking them way before surgery even happened. It took me 3 months to raise my levels 27 points. My lowest level was 20. It was awful. But, it has made a huge difference in continuing to take it. I have chosen to stay on my RX. We have mail in prescriptions, so it doesn't cost me a thing to have an RX for it. I just have to have my blood work done every 3 months to double check my levels. No biggie really.

I take 2000 IU a day... OTC from Kirkland. My doctor noticed it on my six month panel. So far the OTC softgels are doing the job. My surgeon never commented on it. My folks living in the northeast have some Vitamin D deficiency.

Six months after surgery, I became Iron deficient. The Iron in the chewable Flintstone Vitamins were insufficient. I spread out my Vitamins during the day and gave at least 2 hours separation between my Calcium and iron, because the intake of these two conflict with each other.

As a result of these lab findings, I began taking an iron supplement. I suspect what caused the change was the fact that I began taking milk for my Protein and milk contains Calcium. As a result I had created an absorption conflict. So as a result, I took all my calcium intakes (including milk) during the morning and early afternoon and all my iron just before I went to bed. My iron is now registering O.K. in my lab tests.

I was low, too. My Vitamin D level was 3 - literally. It didn't delay my surgery. I took 50,000 iu for a week or two before and after surgery, and now I'm taking 20,000 iu a week. I take 2 5000 iu tabs twice a week, and it's been working for me. Most obese people seem to have low Vitamin d levels. My Iron levels were OK, but now I supplement to keep them normal.

I was on that Rx dose twice in one year. And my Vitamin D levels, according to the doctor who did my final labs before my surgery, never really did get up to where they needed to be. But I was at a double disadvantage being black, I tend to absorb less natural Vitamin D from the sun. I also live in Chicago, and there are all these shadows and tall buildings blocking the sun. Add those two factors on top of the obesity (which I was told by a nutritionist that there seems to be a correlation between obesity and vitamin D deficiency, thought she said there was no specific reason why). But anyhow, no, my low vitamin D did not delay anything. I really had no noticeable side effects from my deficiency. I take 1000IU a day and am no longer deficient. I think since I've lost so much weight I absorb it better? Who knows.

Thanks for all the feedback. I picked up my Rx today. My doc has me taking 50000 iu pills 3 times a week. I think it may be a little excessive but I don't think too much Vitamin D will hurt me, especially with how much I've been inside from all the rain we have been having.

The low Iron could be an issue for surgery even if it doesn't delay it.

Low Iron is a high risk of bleeding, not clotting, during and post surgery-which gets surgeons very concerned. Greater risk of losing the patient on the table..

also, iron delivers oxygen to the blood- and organs. if you don't get enough oxygen to your organs (brain too) it could cause probs including not healing well.

low iron is a cause of lethargy, low energy, general can't ever fully wake up all day feeling

low D causes scabies. can't remember what scabies are but surely, unpleasant

VitaD manufactures melatonin which regulates your body clock and sleep cycle

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
