I am not sure what I want to do regarding the day of my surgery. (Which is in 4 days) Should I have my family stay w/ me at the hospital?

Who was with you in the hospital the day of surgery? Did they spend the night @ the hospital w/ you? Did they drop you off? And pick you up? If you was alone did you wish you had someone there?

So excited and nervous for my surgery on October 8th.

I believe that if you can, someone should stay with you. When I had my sleeve 2 years ago, I had my young adult daughter stay with me, and i'm so glad she did. She helped me get up and walk in the middle of the night, put the SCD sleeves on and off, and just was generally my advocate. More recently, I had plastics, and another daughter stayed the night for similar reasons. I'm a registered nurse, and so I know what needs to be done, but I wanted someone else there to help watch out. When my mother had surgery recently, we stayed with her (different surgery). She's also a nurse and capable, but she also said she was glad we were there. You'll get a variety of opinions, so it's a personal decision. It's not a requirement, and most people probably don't. I just know that mistakes are possible even in the best of hospitals and with the best staff, and we all can use an advocate when compromised.

I didn't have anyone at the hospital with me and I didn't need extra help except with the first shower. I made it on my own, but some help would have made it easier. Perhaps letting them stay with you during the day would be a good idea. It can get a little boring. Also, it is nice to have someone waiting for you after surgery.

I had my husband with me. He stayed until about 3 hours after surgery, then went home. Honestly, you are pretty out of it the first day, and I wasn't really up for visitors. I felt better the next day and was glad to have a few visitors, but really just wanted to sleep the entire time when I wasn't up walking.

My wife stayed with me during visiting hours, I would agree with Babbs, it took me more than a day to shake off the anethesia, just wanted to sleep, when awake I felt nauseous but I was given meds to relieve it. I had a bad night the first night, couldn't pee, so I they had to put in a catheter (worse than the surgery), so nothing my wife could have done anyway. By day three I was feeling fine.

I had my surgery on an outpatient basis...in at 6:00 am out by noon. When I was at home, it was comforting to know that my husband was in the next room in case I needed something.

I know if I would have stayed at the hospital, I would have wanted someone there with me the first night.

My experience was similar to @@Babbs and @@vincereautmori (minus the catheter). I was getting pain killers through my IV and was "fuzzy" and sleeping a lot. I got visitors the next day when I was more ready for them.... worked out fine. By the next day I felt 99% normal.

My plan is to have my hubby at the hospital until I get my room and then he is heading home to take care of our sons. I won't see them again until I am discharged. I am trying to minimize the amount of school my sons miss and we live about 3 hours from the hospital. Honestly even of we lived closer, I wouldn't change the plan. I am always exhausted after surgery and just want to sleep. My children are exhausting and I don't need that on top of trying to get myself together.

My personality is one that doesn't handle someone coddling me and trying to help me with everything. My plan works for my personality. Every one is different and reacts differently, so I think you have to decide what is best for you.

I was alone the whole time... Took a taxi to the hospital, had a private room, a friend drove me home 3 days later and I recovered alone. I just had to have my pantry stocked with the right things. The nurses were so attentive, I needed no help in the hospital. Friends came to see me but I was on morphine and really don't remember it! I think it would be comforting to have a loved one there but not necessary.

I had surgery at OCC in TJ. I was the last surgery of the day, around 2pm and my sister hung out before and during surgery, but didn't stay overnight. I was pretty out of it and barely remember her being there as I was waking up. I Facetimed with her around 9pm once I was a little more coherent. She came back around 8am the next day to go back to the hotel with me. I had no problems being alone. Got up and walked and peed fine by myself. The nurse was attentive to anything I needed. Basically just dozed and watched TV all night. My sister was much better off getting a good night's sleep at the hotel.

Good heavens, no! Don't force anyone to stay up all night with you. Let them rest. They're going through a lot, too. But they're not getting the good drugs like you are.

You'll have nurses and a buzzer. That's what they're there for.

My mom was there during surgery and husband stayed with me overnight. I was very happy to have him there to unhook and unplug everything every time I had to use the restroom. I wouldn't have wanted to call the nurse.

Mine stayed thru surgery till the end of the day (around 6pm ish) and went home and came back the next day to pick me up when I was discharged.

You are going to be up all night anyway because you have to keep walking. If you need help there is a nurse and nursing assistant assigned to you that you can call anytime with the buzzer. They will come help you walk around or whatever you need.

After the first time, I was able to get up and unplug my IV machine and go walking or to the restroom just fine by myself.

I am new here just found out about the app. My surgery was exactly 1 week ago. My kids and my parents were there for the surgery. I was in hospital 2 nights my daughters took turns sraying with me. It does make a difference. Hope this helps. Good luck with your surgery!

My best friend brought me n stayed through the surgery. When I woke up at 5pm she was there with my husband and 4 kids. I kissed them told them to go home and I went right back to sleep n when I woke up again around 7 they were gone and I was fine and relied on the nurses and staff to walk with me and take care n they were great. My doc kept the catheter in over night so I didn't need to get up to pee.

It really depends on your family needs as well as you own.
