August post op sleevers: Check in

Recommended Posts

Hey August Sleevers... I'm celebrating fitting into a size 12, which is even starting to get a little loose :) and size Medium tops. Don't remember ever fitting into Medium. I'm getting married in September, so I hope I can lose a little more before then. I've met my surgeon's goal of 175, but at 5'5, I feel that's still a little high for me. I'd ideally love to get down to 160 or 150...but given how slow my weight loss has been since the beginning, I'm starting to have some doubts! The surgeon says that the next 3 months will be crucial for me to step up my efforts, because in month 9 in pretty much slows to 1-2 lbs/month. I'm feeling frustrated at how slow my weight loss has been, but paradoxically...I'm also really happy to be living my life in a more "normal" size, and grateful for the opportunity. Just the roller-coaster I'm on!

Just checking in - Sleeved 8/19/14 Age: 50 HW: 347 SW: 317 CW: 246

Following the plan. Kinda slow going for me lately... I've lost only 10 pounds in the last 8 weeks!! But my clothes are getting so loose again. I guess I must be kinda solid for an old lady... I'm fitting into 12/14 pants and Medium/Large tops. Much better than the 24/26's I started in :)

I pray everyone is having good results and getting healthier!

My Surgery was 8/26/14 - started at 312lbs and am now at 212... so I made it to 100lbs!!! Yay - but Ive only lost 3.5 lbs in 2.5 months! So its very slow. However I have dropped 2 sizes in those 2 months. So wierd that I only lost 3.5 lbs but I lost 2 sizes. Ive had no problems, except that I cant eat bread - but that is not a real problem. Bread hurts as it goes down... and keeps me from eating anything else.

I have gone from a size 28 to now a snug size 14... My goal was always 180lbs and about 11/12... so Im not too far.

Awesome job on your progress so far! I'm in the same boat too at 7 months (August 22) out...BIG slow down in the weight loss. Only lost 2 in February and 4 so far this month but don't think I'm gonna lose anymore because the scale hasn't moved the last couple of weeks( actually it did...I GAINED A half pound) SO FRUSTRATING because I am a stickler and kill myself with exercise 3-5 days a week. Must be a normal thing that happens around this time, hu? I'm also a slow loser anyway, so double frustrating! At this rate, I won't hit goal by my year surgiversary. Oh well. It's not a race, right? ;)

Hullo, all. :)

HW 235, SW 216 CW 155 SD 8/18/14

Only 5 pounds to goal (150 pounds).

I'm buying and wearing size 10s now. I imagine I could get down to 8s before this is over. But it's already pretty surreal to me. And it's gone so fast!

I've had no complications. The whole thing has been pretty easy, actually. I've tracked all along (MFP), used a Fitbit, feeling great, doing great.

But we've also had a rough time: In September, I had my gallbladder out. In October, hubby was diagnosed with cancer. He's through radiation and almost through chemo and is already in remission -- what a champ! In December our beloved dog died unexpectedly. In January, hubby's son died (of a stroke). And this week, hubby's 96-year-old dad was diagnosed with cancer. We're both very optimistic people and are really welcoming the hope of spring and the joy of summer. :)

Through all this, my WLS and my weight loss program was a welcome distraction from "real life." Through all of hubby's challenges he has been amazingly supportive. And vice versa. Going through life is so much easier with good people who love you.

Five more pounds to go, and then I'll be on the "maintaining side" of this journey. A whole new deal, huh?

I wouldn't have given the world to have missed this journey. I think VSG surgery is brilliant. It's given me a completely new lease on life. Wow!

Hey all, it's so nice to see everyone's updates! I was sleeved 8/25/14, SW:347 CW:280 so I've lost 63lbs. I'm thrilled to be back under 300, but I have to admit I thought I would have lost more by now. I know it's not a race... but my surgeon makes me feel like that. I know it's part my fault, I should be exercising more. Between. My illnesses and my mom's cancer I've barely had time to sleep let alone exercise.

I have implemented more walking tho. Bought a fitbit charge HR and have been tracking calories in vs calories out religiously.

Anyone know what's up with that? I burn more calories then I eat and yet I don't lose much? How is that possible?

Awesome to see everyone's progress. I was sleeves 8/13/14. Day of surgery weight was 363. As of today I am at 259 for a total drop of 104lbs in a short 7 months. My waist size dropped by a foot. I started jogging and have never felt better in my life. 36 more lbs to my goal weight.

Can't eat mashed potatoes but that's about it. I don't consume any carbonated products and fried foods have been pretty non existent and honestly, I don't miss either. Wish I would have done it sooner. Good luck to everyone!

Hi August sleevers! I'm happy to say that my latest stall finally broke. It was another month long one. I guess I should just get used to them. Last Thursday I was 161, and yesterday 154. Today still 154, so maybe the big drop is over. So happy to be out of the 160's :P

My goal is back to seeming attainable. Funny how when we get in to a stall we start thinking we'll never get there - at least I do. It's such a mental thing.

It's good to hit 70lbs lost. From my HW ever over 110 gone...dayum. Now if Spring would ever come to MA life would be just fab, lol.

Keep on losin' !

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well. All is well at my end. I am so happy I had this surgery. My goal was to be a size 10 and currently I am a size 12 and the clothes are snug on me. My body fat % also keeps going down; I started at 52.4% and now am at 41.7%. Which is one of the numbers I am keeping an eye on. My visceral fat rating (fat around vital organs in the stomach) is now 8; from 15. My degree of obesity was 83.8% when I started and now it is 37.7%. I have been doing strength training 3/wk. I do not have any lose skin! Yay!! I am able to wear short clothes. My thighs are firm. As I stated before, I am not focusing on my weight. I am healthy and feel it. I am happy with the way I look and I have been getting lots and lots of compliments. Happy Easter to all and good luck on your journey!

It's been 10 long years! Here is my VSG weight loss surgiversary update..

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
