October Buddies wanted

Recommended Posts

My Surgery is October 7Th. Just completed pre admissions and pre op appointment. Very nervous and excited at the same time. It took me since 8 month's from start to finish because I had to do a supervised 6 month diet first. Nice to meet you all.

I am Oct. 7th also.

I'm scheduled for October 27th! My surgeon is Dr. Aanestad (IA). I start my pre-op on the 13th, and from what I understand it's similar to a modified Atkins diet. No carbs, no sugar, no caffeine, high Protein. I'm excited that it's finally here after almost a year getting there, but scared @ the same time.. Ready though!

Good luck TinaC. That pre op liquid sounds about like what I am on now. My journey this time has been about a year also. You will do great!!!!

Charlottesville, VA here! Last PCP appointment on 10/1 then everything will be submitted to insurance for final approval! Nervous, anxious, excited, all of this waiting has been agony! I have been mentally ready for this since about April! Seems like surgery will never get here!!

Probably another 6 weeks or so until insurance approval and actual surgery date...............

Hi everyone. I'm having gastric bypass on Oct 6 and kinda love the idea of having October surgery buddies. I've always been a bit hit & miss about posting and will work to do better with this group. Something tells me I may be looking for new things to focus on & I'll bet this group will fit the bill.

I'm surprised by all the different pre-op diets I'm seeing. I wonder why such differences between the Drs.

So glad to see our October Group growing!!

I'm struggling quite a bit with working out. Or should I say, I have ZERO motivation to work out! Ugh...I'm just worried I won't be able to get back into the groove of working out after surgery if I don't get back into it now, before surgery.

I keep telling myself every morning that tonight I'll either go to the gym, or go walking, something--and then by evening I'm just exhausted. I already get up at 5:30 in the morning and I just can't get up earlier to work out. I've always done well in the past going right away after work, but our evening just seem to be full of kids activities, and I hate making my honey do it all....I also know I can't really use that as an excuse because he's said numerous times he's fine with handling stuff in the evenings, but it's just that "mom guilt" that gets me I guess.

Don't worry Amylynns, I have zero motivation as well. I wonder if it has to do with how tired I've been lately. I'm sure once the weight comes off you'll have more energy and motivation to work out better.

800 calories sounds like a rough 2 weeks. Remember to reach out if you need help. A lot of us are in similar boats right now. My liquid diet seems to be hardest around 5pm right before dinner- so that's when I check the boards and forums to stay focused and remind myself of the end goal.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
