i found a lump on my breast and i'm petrified

Recommended Posts

All, thank you for your support. Your messages meant the world to me!

@@BeagleLover, i have my mammo every year around my birthday in october. well, this year's will be a little early.

here's the update. it's a doozy.

i called my pcp, who i have to tell you i adore, and was put on hold for a very long time. (the receptionist pays great attention to the person at her desk at the moment, so i knew i wasn't forgotten, just that they were busy.) while i was on hold, i was IMing a work friend about this, and she highly recommended her obgyn. i was not really thrilled with mine, and hers is much closer to my home, so i hung up on my pcp and called them. luckily, someone had just cancelled and they were able to see me within the hour, so i left work and headed on over.

i get there, sign in and fill out the new patient paperwork, and realize my blood sugar was feeling low. i'm a type 1 diabetic, fyi. so i tested my blood and i'm just on the cusp of low. and geez louise (not my actual words, censored for public consumption) i didn't have my glucose tablets with me. as a type 1, i am always prepared for anything. why today of all days did this anomaly occur? so, i turned off my insulin pump to stop delivery of any additional insulin and decided to ride it out. that should have been the first sign to me that my sugar was going low... irrational thinking is a big sign for me.

so the nurse takes me into the exam room and does a medical history, then has me undress and sends the doctor in. actually, a certified nurse midwife. anyway, to my great embarrassment, not only can't i find the lump now, but i can't even remember which breast it was in! and my blood sugar is now low enough to cause irrationality to set in big time, and so i don't tell her that my sugar is low and i'm not functioning. i just sat there and felt like an idiot. she couldn't find the lump. great first impression on my new practitioner.

she gave me a script for a diagnostic mammo, which i am having friday morning, and told me whether they find something or not, if i want she will send me to a specialist after the mammo. i went home, ate, and lay down in bed feeling reallllly bad, and then found the lump again. i can only feel it when i'm lying on my side, and on the table i was lying on my back. oy vey.

ANYWAY. i'm feeling better mentally, which is due a LOT to all of your messages and responses. i'm in the office today and feel like i can function, and will update you again after the mammo on friday. i love this forum, i knew someone would reach out to me. hugs to all of you!

Wow, sounds like quite a day! Glad you're getting the mammo on Friday and will hopefully have peace of mind soon.

@@jessiquoi, I know this is hard to do, but please think along the lines of, "I refuse to get upset over something I don't even know is there or important." Relax until you know otherwise. That'll help stay on an even keel in the meantime. Best wishes for Friday!

So, everything came back normal after the mammogram and ultrasound on Friday... I'm sorry I didn't take the time to update this thread, I was too busy doing the happy dance.

Except the breast center just called me, and the radiologist wants me to come back in to have more films and an ultrasound on the OTHER breast, cause it looks different than last year.

They said it's not an emergency, which is good cause I'm out of town on biz until the end of next week. I'll go on 9/3. Wow, I can't believe it's almost September already. I'm almost sleeve-ready!!!

Good. Now you can relax. I'm sure if they were concerned about the other breast, they would want you in right away.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
