I'm 9 days post op from RNY, off pain meds for 2 days, and getting stir crazy. How soon after surgery did you drive?

I drove a little in the neighborhood 4 days out but not on highways and such until about 10 days out. I didn't have any pain meds after the second day -- I've heard you need to be off pain meds for at least 2 days. However, I had pneumonia and landed back in the hospital at 5 days out and it took me another week before my brain didn't feel fuzzy and tired even without any pain meds. The tummy and incisions and such weren't the issue for me as much as the brain inadequacy!

You should ask your doctor what their rule is but I'm pretty sure it's not going to be LESS than 2 days off pain meds. Pain meds can get you a quick DUI.

You are so right, Ginger! I don't need a DUI...I don't think they offer a puréed diet in jail! Thanks for the feedback!

I am on my way to the park today with my husband. I think i will ask to drive. I miss it a little and its nice to go outside.

I drove once I was completely off narcotics,which was after about a week.

Good idea ke-sa, might ask hubby to take me to the park this evening. Different scenery to take a walk.

Angel, I was driving 7 days out. Had to get outta the house. My surgeon said once you are off the pain meds you can drive!

6 days out I think? Just about a mile and back. I was off the pain meds for 2 days. I drove further 8 days out and it was ok, but I was uncomfortable.
