Panicked about Weight Plateau!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op from RNY. For the last week and a half I've been stuck at the same weight! I was 286, day of surgery I was 273 and currently I'm 251. Is hitting a plateau this early on normal? What can I do, if anything, to jump start the loss again? I'm beginning to feel defeated... I'm drinking and eating my Protein and drinking lots of Water.

Also, I keep getting food "stuck" it seems when I swallow. What am I doing wrong there? I am cutting and eating the tiniest bites and chewing well...at least I feel like I am. Lol

Any help or encouragement to these 2 issues would be appreciated! Thanks much!

Megan

I lost about 22 pounds the first 2-1/2 weeks and then stuck at that number for the past 10 days. Finally this morning the scale moved down a pound. I saw my doctor Tuesday and he was very happy with my progress.

I'm determined NOT to let the scale numbers rule my happiness. Each pound I lose means another number on the scale I NEVER plan to see again. I know if I keep eating on the plan (right foods and right amounts) and exercising, this weight will come off. It HAS to! You cannot continually eat a LOT fewer calories than your body burns and NOT lose weight. The only way you'll stop losing weight this early is if you quit the plan and start eating like you used to (only I don't know how I could cram that much food into my stomach now).

As far as getting stuck... I've found it really makes a difference on how moist the food is. I've never been one to use a lot of sauces or dips on my food, but now I regularly use fat free mayo mixed with my chicken or beef to help it go down. I've also heard it's good to dip in FF Greek yogurt so it even pumps up the Protein some.

You can do this -- try to quit worrying about how fast and how much and just keep focusing on doing the right thing and learning how to fit the food plan into your life. This is temporary!

It's normal! I was plateaued for 3 weeks!!! But then it started coming off again. Just breathe and if you search the word stall or plateau you will see a lot of others had the same thing happen..

If you haven't done so already, I recommend taking measurements ASAP.

I've noticed that each time I hit a plateau on the scale, it is time to plan for new clothes as I start losing on the tape measure.

But as others have already mentioned, it sounds very normal. I hit my first around 2 weeks out and started questioning everything (even wondered whether the surgeon had even done the surgery for real). Luckily after reading of others similar experiences on numerous forums similar to this one (hadn't found this one at the time), I quickly realized I wasn't alone.

Our bodies are in shock after the surgery and need breaks at times to try and "recover" from the trauma. Stick with the program your surgeon and nutritionist gave you and your body should come around.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
