Ok, I am starting to freak out a bit! I have been through my psych appt., met with the nurses to go throught the do's and don'ts and what to expect. I am now scheduled for my consult with the Dr. on 7/24/14. I have been assured that after that surgery will be scheduled fairly quickly. I am not nervous at all about the surgery or anything like that. I am very owrried about the protein!!! I am very sensitive to tastes and textures. I have been trying to find Protein bars and shakes that I can stomach but am having a really hard time. Can you all please help! Let me know what you are using, tips, tricks... anything that will help!

Thanks tons!

Hello,

I am newly banded (June 20th) and it depends on what your surgeon gives you on your list to eat/drink pre-op. Mine was Chike Protein shakes, Jello and sugar free drinks and broth. I did it for 2 weeks. Hated everyday of it but there were no other options so I did it, because I had to and I am worth it. The shakes even made me sick to my stomach so although I was allowed 4, I rarely got in more that 2or 3.

Try not to fret and get all twisted up about it. It won't be easy but you can do it. I promise you wont die, (might be grumpy!) but you can do it too!

Although it is to shrink our fatty liver the best part is if you follow it, the weight will fall off. I lost 22 lbs in 2 weeks.

Good luck!

Colleen

Hi there and congratulations on getting a surgery date. Every surgeon has their own pre-op protocol so it will be good to find out what yours is going to be. Mine had a specific shake which they give out -- I read the ingredients and there was no way I was going to have that so I worked with the nutritionist on another one of my choice. I think there is flexibility here. I adhered to the two-week protocol of only shakes -- and yours may be totally different, some have longer, some have NONE -- and I'm glad I did as I think it's really important to follow the instructions of your surgeon. The idea is to shrink the fat around the liver prior to surgery. I was glad for the jump start of weight loss prior to getting my band as it can take a while for the band to be adjusted properly and the weight loss to begin in earnest. Good luck to you -- you're going to do beautifully! Get some extra exercise, drink a lot of fluids and get ready for the best thing ever to happen -- you are choosing yourself and your healthy future. That is very powerful. Best wishes!

My standby all time favorite. Blender is a 16 oz glass. I put about 1-2 inches of cold from the fridge, Water in. Add about 4 frozen strawberries. 1/4 c frozen blueberries. 1 large spoon vanilla yogurt, 1 scoop of vanilla "pure Protein " whey. Blend & drink. I find it amazing.

Also, like others have said, it's not forever. Your taste for things may change after surgery, mine sure did. I am sure, I never knew how amazing hot cream of wheat could taste! Lol.

You will do just fine, no need to panic. Best of luck to you!

Josiek1988, congratulations on getting to this point. No turning back now! I am 5 week out from being banded and love it!! As everyone has mentioned each surgeon is different and there protocol before surgery. I was allowed shakes(some I made and others I bought like the slim fast.....HIGH PROTEIN), broth, sugar free popsicles, sf Jello, and sf pudding. My sister was allowed 2 shakes, a sensible dinner, broth, sf popsicles, sf Jello but no sf pudding. Inform your surgeon or call ahead and speak to the nurse about your concerns on the Protein. Maybe they have some free samples to try out products they recommend. When I go for my fill, the office gives us samples of a product (ujury) that they recommend. Best wishes to you and please keep us posted.

Rose

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
