why can I eat this some days but not others

Why can I eat something one day but the next day it will get stuck

What food?

You're experiencing what most of us in the green zone experience though. I've been doing this long enough to know what to expect and can feel those soft stop signals before I have a major stuck episode.

Learning to eat slowly and eat smaller bites can take a year or more for some of us to figure out. If you're chewing properly, it's most likely you're eating too fast.

But, our bands are fickle and most of us struggle with Bfast meals.

If a certain food gives me trouble....then I write it off...I don't go back and try to force the issue repetitive times....I have accepted some things and moved on....

Like Red meat...gave me problems..gave it up entirely...not interested in going back and seeing if I can eat it today, years later....

Having said all that crap, there is a phenomenon where the band can feel tighter and looser at times....a misnomer, but gets the point across.....

I quit trying to understand why....but I have heard everything from rain in the forecast , stress, Jet Travel, to a full moon....

I'm always tightest first thing in the morning....(After not eating and resting for a good 12 hrs)

Yea, I'm starting to learn the early signs of food getting stuck and stopping right away. I've also written off a few things and learning to chew slower and take smaller bites. Thanks for the feedback.

FOR Me, I just start to feel a tightness, like when I used to swallow too big of a bite (before surgery that is) then I know not to put one more thing in my mouth because it's going to hurt for a while. ....... in relation to that feeling, I have a question that I know will be TMI, but, here goes,..... when I get that feeling, I know I will be spitting out a ton of saliva for at least 15 mins. Mainly because I can't swallow ANYTHING else because it's too painful. But I have yet to throw up. I've heard some say they projectile vomit right away but I havent. Does anyone else have the mouth watering issue vs throwing up?

Mary, food not only can get stuck but it can back up into your esophagus. If you swallow too much food at once or swallow a big chunk of bread or meat, the food can stop right at your stoma(band portal). Any food swallowed after this will start to back up into your esophagus. The feeling you get is like a golf ball stuck under your ziphoid(lower sternum). If you catch it early it's like a small bean bag is lodged there and can take up to an hour to pass.

Kandi, we call it slime like in Ghostbusters. So sliming is quite normal and very few of us escape this disgusting body function. Your esophagus is creating phlegm or saliva to aid food lodged in your esophagus to pass through to the stomach. The problem is that so much is created and if you just swallow it, more buildup and backup to the food already lodged in your stoma. So it's best to spit it up if you can. All of us have spent some time in a restaurant bathroom hocking up slime till the stuck food pases. Some people develop the ability to PB(productive burp) the stuck food up and spit it out. I've only been able to do it twice in over 2 years.

Thank you :) I've just been banded since March 2014.....still learning so much..my weight loss pretty much stopped after the 1st 6 weeks, I know it's a slow process, but I'll be glad when SOMEthing starts to drop :-/ ..... any other app or support group suggestions?

I find seasonal allergies play a big part in what I can tolerate.

I know in the spring / fall with snow mold, pollen, harvesting dust, etc I have a more restriction than in the summer and winter even though my fills don't change. Taking my antihistamines / inhalers makes a slight difference.

Stress also plays a part in what I am able to tolerate, must be something with tensing up?

Who knows, sometimes they are just finicky!

I am so glad I'm not the only one this happens too!! I always wondered why even drinking Water first thing in the morning bothered me some days.

I can drink my coffee 1st thing, then about an hour later I drink a Protein Shake and I'm good. I was just on vacation and thought I'd eat Breakfast. ..... BAD idea! Lol. It also seemed to make the entire day rough for me.

My surgery was in 2010. I did well for a while, but I don't think I was mentally ready, so I gained the weight back. Now I'm starting all over again. This time I worked on my "issues" with a therapist so I'm better prepared.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
