LAP BAND REVISION AFTER 10 YEARS

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My mums a bit worried because she needs to get a lap band revision, she had one put in about 10 years ago but it wasn't adjustable and basically stretched and stopped doing its job. She's wanting another lap band put in, but can't get it done if they can't remove the old lap band.

Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this so that I can get back to my mum about it, I know other people have had revisions to other WLS's, but I'm assuming it's the same process as they still have to remove the band?

Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of anyone who couldn't have their band removed. It's a simple surgery unless there are erosion issues?

Sometimes a new band cannot be installed due to excessive scar tissue and the surgeon won't know this till they get in to the body cavity to see?

Finally, I've also never heard of a band that's not adjustable and could stretch? Maybe your information isn't correct or the band that's around her stomach stopped being adjustable due to a leak or being faulty?

It was done for free years ago, I've just googled it and it's also called a VGB "vertical gastric band" .. Pretty much no one gets them anymore because obviously the adjustable one is much better.

She's worried that the band has sunk into the tissue, apparently it makes it a more dangerous procedure and leaves a hole?

I understand everyone is different, I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar to her so I could pass on some information.

I googled it too and glad no one is doing those anymore(I hope). Yes, there are several here who have suffered with a band that has eroded into the stomach and it's called erosion. It's dangerous and usually they won't place another band over an erosion site. Go to the search engine on this site and search for erosion under all forums and you'll find many discussions about erosion?

Thanks, I didn't realise that it was erosion. I'll let her know!

Here's a study regarding band erosion and surgical removal:

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
