What do you miss most after Weight Loss Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was never a big soda drinker, id have a diet coke if we went out to eat, but i started even cutting that back a bit and it got to where I dont miss that little bit at all. Just try cutting back a little every week or two. After awhile, you wont miss it. As far as a food I miss ? Occasionally I'll think of a General Tso's chicken from our local deli that I loved, and raw broccoli, because it was one of the few veggies i did like, and I made a killer broccoli salad. !! So good id even have it for Breakfast. Now, broccoli= very bad stuck ! Oh, well ! I dont miss the sleep apnea, stomach probs, or size 18 clothes or being tired all the time. I'll take that over broccoli anytime !

I kind of miss my sweet tooth. After surgery and having drank those Protein Shakes, I don't handle sweet things very well. I can barely tolerate a shake - drink it because I have to but too sweet.

Omg I am not alone. These are disgustingly sweet!!!

When I get dolled up and put on my new tight fitting clothes, my new shoes, and feel like a million dollars, I promise you I don't miss a thing from my old life. I feel 20 years younger. I am laughing and meeting friends and the weight of the world is lifted off my shoulders. My husband was sleeved, and 90 lbs down he is a bronze God (he loves the sun and the pool 1 hour a day, who eats less than me and he is the happiest and healthiest I have ever seen him. I can only imagine how I would feel if I were 40 and had this sleeve!

I considered myself a diet spade addict before the sleeve. I was easily a 10 cans a day addict. I haven't had a sip since surgery and haven't had a sip.....just realize that a lot of soda and drinking in General was due to the massive portions and salty food we ate before surgery. So now, I haven't missed soda a bit.....probably the only thing I miss now is the ability to snack while I'm cooking or to have appetizers during dinner.....there's just no room for it anymore....I have to consider what I eat because I know there's no "extra" room......

The only thing I slightly grieved, very early in the process, was giving up binge eating. Knowing I'd never have the crutch of eating my way into a food coma like I did before. Of course that was the entire purpose of the surgery, but it is still a loss and awareness that the old habit must die.

JWM this really hit home for me. I actually told a family member In a moment of frustration that I regretted the surgery due to not being able to binge eat.

@@Averiex, grieve it. But then let it go. We will conquer this and find healthier ways to deal with life than checking out with food. Our lives depend on it.

I drank diet soda and super sweet southern tea like an alcoholic drinks liquor. I had one or four with every meal. I felt like I couldn't function in the morning until I got that first sip of ice cold diet cherry coke! I felt like my food couldn't digest without it. I was really worried about it before my surgery. I'm 7 weeks post op and I only drink unsweet tea with splenda. I NEVER could do that before the surgery. I'm down 48 pounds and just returned to work this week and everyone is noticing! I've worked so hard at the gym and followed everything to a T. So the more I lose the less I miss!

I don't miss overeating every meal until I threw up or felt my food sitting all the way up to my throat. I don't miss the GUILT that came with every binge meal. I don't miss dodging people that haven't seen me since I gained so much weight because I knew they were going to think, "Wow! She blew up!" I don't miss taking vacation days to get out of team builders at work when they were going to do yoga or zumba because I was too embarrassed to be that big and jiggling around in front of my coworkers. I could go on and on......

Might as well add my two cents. I miss nothing. Let me say it again....I MISS NOTHING. There isn't a food or beverage out there that I miss more than getting my life and mobility back.

I feel light as a feather now like I'm walking on air. No more plodding along leaning on my cane for all it was worth. The cane is gone, my mobility and freedom is back and I couldn't care less about not being able to drink soda. Who cares?? I have a life again.

You may not be in the same desperate situation I was in...or others on this site have also faced but you have to understand that we are passionate about what we have gained rather than what we no longer eat or drink.

Wishing you well on whatever decision you make.

I was a big diet coke drinker before surgery but I don't miss it a bit and don't care if I ever have another one. I was also a big sweet tea drinker and would drink about a half gallon per day. Not only can I not drink it, I can't even drink unsweetened. I have lost the taste for tea alltogether. I miss being able to eat spicey foods because my reflux will not allow it. I also miss being able to eat appetizers. But really, I have gained so much more than I have lost and prefer this life style over the one I had pre surgery. More than missing food I miss the me that was thin and looked good in a bikini..... I may never get to the bikini again but I am going to find that thin body again one day soon.

I too miss gulping Water when I'm thirsty.

I don't miss much. But every now and then, I do mourn Mimosas and an icy cold Corona with lime.

Thanks all! The number of you that have nothing to regret and were soda addicts make me feel so much better! :)

I'm very interested in the surgery. I actually can't wait till I get everything done and ready for it! I'm just wondering what life will be like afterwards.

For banders, it's believed soda pop can expand the pouch causing dilation. It's also an addiction for many people and many people can't seem to stay away from it when they eat. You know, the no drinking while eating rule?

I sent you a private message regarding your other ? about needing advice about your band. Need to go to the band forum please?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
