Hi all, Im from Sydney so I hope you dont mind me posting in this thread.. I have been banded since june 2005 and have not lost 1 single kilo. I have to admit that i had a baby in that time but still i am so disappointed and now want to have a gastric bypass, does anyone here know of anyone who has had the band then gone on to have the bypass? it sounds pretty drastic to me but the weight is just not coming off. i have had so many fills and unfills. i now have 7mls.. sorry if i am sounding so negative but would love some feedback.

Tracy

Hi everyone... well i had my second fill so now i have 3ml in a 6ml band. It was more pleasant than my 1st fill... probably because i was aware what to expect this time and i wasnt nervous. Anyway, he suggested i stay on fluids for 3 days just to see if the amount of fill is okay. I lost 4kg inbetween fills ( in 5 week period) which he said is excellent.

Hi everyone

well I had my first fill on thursday. He initially put 4 mls in caused too much restriction, so he took 2 mls out. I am still having problems with a really sore throat its now 4 weeks since the surgery. Can anyone offer me some advice? I already take 40mg somac at night for reflux.

Thanks Lisa

Hi Everone....

Lisa... did your doc put 4mls in on your first fill??? Thats a huge amount in one shot. If this is the case im not surprised the restriction was too much. Maybe my doctor just plays it safe adding gradual amounts.

Ive had 2 fills now.... first time was 2mls and a few days ago was another ml. Im going to have my third fill and another ml added on the 1st June.

I was banded nearly 8 weeks ago and it took about 5-6 weeks until the soreness in my throat completely resolved. .... a small degree of trauma is caused to the throat when putting the airway in your mouth at the commencement of surgery. Sucking on lozengers is worth a try. This is one possiblt cause of the sore throat and the most likely... ( there's my 16yrs as a nurse coming your way)

Hi there Magii, well i do have restriction because i cant seem to hold alot of certain foods down but on the other hand sometimes the foods that i once could not eat go down easily. I think that because i cant eat some foods i turn to sweets, like biscuits dipped in coffee and cake.. I know its the wrong food to eat but when your hungry u tend 2 eat anything and everything..

I spoke to my surgeon 2day and he recommended that i have the band removed then wait 3 months then he will do the bypass at no cost to me, so i am quite happy with that but in the 3 months that i have to wait he suggested that i have councilling for the eating.

Hi Tracymcp....I know what you mean about the wrong foods go down without a problem, since my last fill I have had a lot of meat getting stuck, it is my fault as I musn't be chewing enough but it's hard to get used to.

I'm glad you spoke to your surgeon and he is willing to do your bypass at no extra cost. Good luck with everything and don't forget to keep us posted on how your going re removal of your band and bypass surgery.:(

I am on day 13 and last night just could not do liquids for dinner when the family were have roast chick so I mashed up veges and a little soft meat (cut up fine) with gravy. It was fantastic, but what I wonder about is that I didnt feel any restriction or have any problem swallowing it. I didnt feel full or bloated after like i expected to. I wasnt hungry to start and havent felt hungry since the op. How much should I have eaten? I had around 3/4 of a cup.

I think seeing someone during your 3 month break is a fab idea. I wish you the best of luck with your surgeries.

Well, not much is new in my neck of the woods. Still plodding along, still maintaining my current weight. I really just popped in to say Hi to everyone!

So "Hi".

I paid for my surgery, then got a refund from my fund and Medicare after the fact, so I didn't have to wait long at all.

Have you been in touch with your doctor? Have they written to let the hospital know that your weight is only going up? It's not the same sort of thing I know, but when my son was very, very little we were on a public waiting list to have his tonsils out. He was sick non stop. My GP wrote a letter to the hospital, and two weeks later we had a date for his surgery (and less than a month after that our private health cover kicked in, lol!)

So maybe a letter could help things along?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
