Week 2: May 27-31st Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Oh! Sorry for the triple post but I wanted to say one thing that might be helpful.

My doc explained if your sleeve is tight all the way to the top like how he does it, your stomach opening is smaller than your esophagus. So when you take a drink it has to funnel in. That's why we get gurgling or a little pain when we take too big of a drink. That typically goes away pretty quick, but it's there. It may feel better in a month or so when all the swelling is down and we are healed.

Just in case some of you are wondering why it feels the way it does. :-)

Thanks, good info. That gurgling does kind of sounds the way a drink does when poured through a funnel. I hate it when I forget to take a small drink and it backs up a bit.

Hi guys!

I had my surgery on Friday the 30th and ended up spending 3 nights in the hospital. Pain was totally manageable - I stopped the morphne the first day. The nausea was pretty bad. They ended up trying something called phenergan which totally wiped me out so I couldn't walk or drink (because I would sleep for 6 or more hours at a time). I did get switched to something else but it took some time to figure out what would work. Monday was the first day I could keep anything down and at that point they could remove the IV. I am doing great at home and am looking forward to hearing how we are all progressing! This is an amazing group :)

Habsi...are you on Clear Liquids or semi liquid? I am on semi liquids. We can have sugar free sorbet, low fat light yogurt, fat free or low fat one percent cottage cheese with no fruit added, fat free ricotta cheese, strained low fat cream Soup made with skim milk or Water, sugar free low fat pudding, thinned hot Cereal made with skim milk or water like cream of wheat or cream of rice. I went to the grocery store and bought some soup they had at the deli today. It was beef barley soup. I filled half the container with the vegetables and meat and half the beef broth. I will eat the beef broth and give the rest to my husband.

I missed the move to the week 2 page. :)

I love all the support but sometimes also feel like I'm doing something wrong. My doctor has me on clear liquid diet for the first week it does not include any Protein. I'm really trying to make an effort with my liquids but I fall short every day. My doctor said I'd be out of work for at least 2 weeks but has me going back on 5/19. I work with small children my feet all day bedding over so I'm not challenging the date. I have enough paid sick time.

I think I'm finally off the pain meds.

Thanks for explaining why our liquid sounds the way it does when we drink.

I have my post op visit Friday where I can get more of my questions answered.

Have a good evening all

barb great to see you back! Glad you did well. I had morphine too but they put in huge syringes of anti-nausea meds so I never once got that - though I never got nausea when I was pregnant so maybe its just lucky me in that area. Bravo for not being on pain meds though. I still take them, I don't like feeling anything if I can help it. lol

Welcome to the group psmassey. How was your surgery? Where are ya from?

Sanddune I'm jealous you still have 2 weeks off! THough bending is NOT fun so thats good you got the time off! I work for myself, so I don't have sick leave at all... don't work, don't get paid. So I could only take off so long.

I did my first day back today, though just 1/3rd the client load I typically do in a day. Tomorrow is a bit more and Friday is a near full day. I can't tell you how glad I am the weekend is soon. And Monday, I get to switch to full liquids! YEA!! I'm dying to have a nice butternutsquash Soup or something different.

Oh I got my Isopure in today and was shocked to find it wasn't gross like everyone thought. Now like most Protein drinks, ice cold is the key. But I got the blue kind and really think its quite like Powerade so I'm pleased. I think I'll probably use one for some popsicles. Its 40g Protein for 20oz so I can see myself certainly getting these for quite awhile, even though they are a tad pricy. Ordering online is cheapest.

I'll be sleeping in my bed tonight for the first time in a week. I did the recliner last night because I was sligtly worried about the bed, but I think I'm ready. I also like what someone else said about putting the pillow under the belly while sleeping sideways is a good trick, I'm totally a side sleeper!

Lylabelle - thanks for listing the name of the new thread so I could make the move. I am making a note to PM you weight on Monday mornings. This could be interesting. I had my surgeon pre-op yesterday and PCP today - surgery was 5/28 - so I am down 20 since 5/18 when I started my 10 days liquid diet pre-op. So far - so good!!

Had my 1 week check up - Doc is happy said everything is looking good and I can go to soft foods for two weeks. Jeans are getting looser good thing I have a few in the closet that are a size smaller. Today I made some pudding but instead of milk I used my premier Protein drink as the milk..can't say it was great but it wasn't bad either so I get two for 1.

Hay everyone, I changed my name from bcannon33 to Singlemom33. I am doing OK. Not getting much Fluid down but I enjoy yogurt and cream of mushroom. Stilling learning how much I can handle. I have throw up a couple of times. I walk around the block everyday but seem to have lack of energy. Just seems like everything that goes down feels like acid reflux which I take my prilosec for but not helping. Still have pain in my incisions but that is it! Don't know how much I have lost haven't been to my PCP but clothes are getting more loose.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
