Only doing pre-op the day before surgery

Recommended Posts

Oh my gosh, I have 4 weeks of preop diet!! 2 weeks of high Protein, low carb, low fat, 1 week of full liquids and 1 week of Clear Liquids. Sheesh. I started my preop diet today!

My doctor is only making me do pre-op liquids the day before my surgery. I am going to do liquids on my own a few days before just to make sure ive lost a few extra pounds. My surgery is 6/17/2014.

Anyone else have to do pre-op for only one day?

Oh, and I just wanted to add, that I am the "standard". No patients do less than what I'm doing and if the BMI is high they have to do a longer pre-op diet phase.

OMG bless you. I would hate to do 4 weeks of pre op but at least you get to put something of substance in your body! You can do it though!

I did! :-) today and it sucks. Lol. Mine was clear liquids. And Isopure is disgusting. Anyways. I'm getting sleeved tomorrow. Very excited. And congrats on your journey. I thought I was gonna do a couple extra days of liquids on my own too but when it came down to it I just wanted to enjoy the last super crap I could. The freeness of eating when I want how I want. I will miss that. And only that. :-)

OK, so I got my date for surgery yesterday, whoop whoop! June 25th and while I was there meeting with my PA and surgeon, I asked them if had to do the whole 2 week liquid pre-op diet because I have heard of others only needing 1 or a few days ect....

Their surgery rules are a strict 2 weeks 1) because they want the liver to shrink down as small as possible so it is out of the way as much as possible and 2)my surgeon Dr. Shawn Garbar does something called a single incision sleeve through the belly button only, and again the 2 weeks makes sure that my liver is as as small as possible. I don't mind that much, I tasted the bariatric Meal Replacement yesterday that he sells in his office and not so bad plus the nurse told me I could doctor it up with pure vanilla or cinnamon, anything as long as there is no sugar. Good luck to everyone

Yahhh congrats on your surgery date!! How long did it take for approval?Wow I wonder if my doctor is doing the single incision also...that would be once less worry about itching from incisions healing!I purchased Chike and unjury Protein for my first week to see if I like the protein...whats the name of the meal replacement that you tried?

Bariatric Advantage high Protein Meal Replacement. I got the chocolate and the vanilla, but it comes in strawberry and banana as well. The chocolate and vanilla are the most easiest to doctor up with other flavors, but everyones different. :)

I would definitely ask your surgeon about the single incision, also reduces the amount of pain your in heard when you come out of surgery and stitch is so so small you don't even know you had a surgery. I do know they have to take a look at your belly to make sure the top of your bra line is low enough with your belly to ensure they can fit the instruments through the belly button.

Good Luck, please let me know how it goes and if your surgeon can do the single incision. Pamela

It is interesting how each doctor has their own pre op diet and things they think they will be able to do to help people shrink that liver Exedra my doctor only required one week low carb Atkins style diet prior to surgery. After our pre op testing the day before surgery he allowed us to go and eat and drink whatever we wanted for our last supper. He said one evening of meal is not going to change the size of the liver whatsoever. One lady in our group that had their sleeve done yesterday did not have to have a pre op diet, I think she has a much lower BMI so they don't expect her to leverage be quite as big.

My surgical PA stressed to me that in this office they insist more on the 2 week because of the single incision my surgeon does, she said that for patients who qualify for the SIGS even a moderate amount of shrinkage makes it easier and safer to move around through my belly button. But yes you are correct, every single surgeon has different feelings and opinions on everything. We just have to trust the one we have chosen to use. Good Luck to you! Did you have surgery yet?

Oh you are doing single incisions! Yes that makes sense. I looked into that and watched a surgery using that on YouTube, I wanted specifically dr aceves and he prefers the 4 incisions method for BMI over small number.

Hi, from Australia. I'm having surgery this Wednesday June 4th. Haven't stuck completely to the 2 week pre op diet so have 3 days left to try and fix it. I'm having open by-pass surgery so maybe it won't be so bad. Anyone else had open surgery?

I am self funding and the only surgeon I could find that would perform the op for self funded only offers it with open surgery. I think he has just never updated his training to key hole. I hope it goes well. I'm a little worried

48 hours of clear liquids for my pre op and that was it. BMI was 40.

You're welcome! Every dr has different requirements and I don't pretend to know why each makes the choices/recommendations they do, but if you trust your dr, trust their recommendations =). I have had great success and and thrilled with how everything has gone, and wasn't sad at all to skip the long pre op diet!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
