Questions about protein and sugar free items

I did look in the frequently asked questions and other topics to see if these questions have been discussed and I didn't see them..

I have questions on the protein intake and the sugar free eating items.

First-I am very leery of protein powders because of GMO's, metals in protein powders, etc. What is the reasoning for using protein powder and not eating the proteins in foods instead?

Second question is about the sugar free options...are they in the "plan" to eat sweet foods without the calories? I am just wondering if I can skip them completely.

Re the Protein shakes...my Dr actually prefers you get the protein from food as soon as you are able, it's just nearly impossible for a while, especially at the beginning, because your capacity is sooooo limited. I still struggle at almost six months out to get all my protein in so I supplement most days with a shake. I know many on here use alternative products that probably aren't GMO so maybe they will chime in. I figure it's a heck of a lot better than what I used to eat so I don't worry about that.

I am not sure I understand your second question. I don't eat a lot of "sugar free" products I just avoid most sweets and when I decide to splurge and have a few bites of something I do the real thing and that's fine with my doctor. I just keep my carb count low (under 60 usually 30-40) and that includes the natural sugars in the food I eat.

When I get a sweet tooth I have some watermelon!! It's sweet and crunchy and not aweful for you!! My doc took me off protein shakes after the second week! It forces me to chose to eat protein before anything else! : )
