So thirsty and in pain

Recommended Posts

Here is a list of the full liquids my doctor gave me to choose from. Remember, everything is in 1 ounce increments every fifteen minutes, alternating full liquid with Water. In other words, have 1 ounce Soup, wait 15 minutes, have 1 ounce Water and so on.

1. Skim Milk

2. Cream Soups, strained

3. sugar free Instant Breakfast (blue box)

4. Low-sugar Protein shake

5. Custard, sugar free, made with skim milk

6. Yogurt, sugar free (light), without fruit or nuts

7. puddings, sugar free

8. Cream of wheat or rice, farina, grits

Goal is to hit 30 grams of Protein by 2 weeks out.

You got this! Just hang in there.

Hello,

I had my surgery on May 20th. This definitely is a challenge, my doc wants us to get 90-100 grams of Protein in along with 48 oz of Fluid so essentially 6 eight ounce shakes along with Water or crystal light. However I can only drink the Protein Like 3 or 4 times because I don't like all of the flavors that I have tried. I don't my sipping on my Water or crystal light but I definitely am not very faun of the Protein Shakes all day. So I definitely understand your pain however. Stick in there it will get better. My burning pain is going on in my belly too and it makes me so sad. Especially if I have to cough. I do use a pillow to push down on it and I am walking at least 20-30 minutes a day but they gas pain or the burning is not going away. I pray it does get better for you and me!

Thank you, thank you everyone for your help and support. Tried some broth last night and vomited for the first time but to be honest I hadn't felt well all evening. Today is a new day and have had some smooth runny yoghurt and feel better if not a bit weak. Will try having 1oz liquid every 15 minutes and see how I get on- I can't do Water for some reason as it makes me queasy but will try some watered down apple juice instead. Can't thank you again for all the support- you all rock!

along with keeping hydrated make sure you are moving around to get that bloated feeling to go away. Once your abdominal cavity isn't full of gas and you're hydrated you'll fell so much better.

Hi, I had my surgery done on Monday 19th May and since then have been in so much pain. My incisions feel like they are on fire, my belly is full of gas and I am so so thirsty. I want to down a glass of iced Water but can only manage little sips before the gas starts to hurt. Please tell me this gets easier - I realize I am only 4 days post surgery and things are bound to get easier but just need reassurance it won't always be like this. Thank you in advance

I do really understand what you are feeling and I can personally tell you that it does get better. I am 4 weeks and one day after surgery. Hang in there it does get much better

Am still not able to drink too much but am certainly feeling better! an oz of liquid every 15 minutes was the way to go - thank you so much for that suggestion @hockeywife91. Feeling stronger everyday and can't wait for the weight to start dropping off :D

my doc was similar to yours. I was able to switch to soft foods week 2. I mostly have gas but it's not the end of the world. I had mine on the 23rd. I notice yogurt doesn't agree with me to well but milk is fine. Keep your head up!

I didn't read all the replies, but what works for me when I have gas pains is Extra Strength Gas X strips. They dissolve on your tongue and work great. Also, walking. I got up and walked whenever the gas was building up. I had my surgery on May 21st. so close to yours. I hope you are doing better now. Every day improves for me.

thanks for the reply. Every day is getting easier. My biggest issue know is knowing exactly how much to eat and when to eat it. Also getting enough Fluid in. And I have been the same weight for like 2 or 3 days which is weird. Maybe I'm not pushing my metabolism enough? Let me know what you think...

shirtsleeve, I have heard a number of people say that you can often go even a week without losing weight. It is the body adjusting to the weight loss. I am only two weeks out and I've heard the third week is often a slow weight loss week so I will see.

I am now on pureed foods and my NUT told me to start eating three meals a day with Snacks in between and of course sipping Water, and Protein Drinks in between. I have always been a water drinker so its pretty easy for me, but I have a friend who found it difficult and found herself in the hospital on IV fluids for 4 days at 3 months out, so just make sure you keep drinking.

good advice! That does make me super nervous! (Getting dehydrated!) I seem to be able to take pretty big sips of water at one time without feeling pain so that's pretty good. Also when I eat I can do a spoonful at a time now. Are you able to do good size bites or very small ones? I finally lost another pound after staying the same for 3 days so that was encouraging. Also if we eat somthing we shouldn't does It get stuck in our sleeves or will it just be harder for the sleeve to process it and get it out? Thanks again for replying! It's great having support from people going through the same thing!

I take small bites and chew them up real well. I don't think the food gets stuck, but it makes the stomach have to work harder to chew it up if you don't chew it up real well. I was told to make it like mush in your mouth. Yogurt goes down real well and I started on canned chicken yesterday and it took me 45 minutes to eat it.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
