Paying $325.00 per fill, too much?

Recommended Posts

I had planned on an aftercare doc after I have my surgery in TJ, but when I had the money to pay them for a fill, I found out that their lawyers are deciding on wheather or not to take other docs patients. I called my second choice and low and behold, now they arent seeing other doctors patients. So, the first doctor I came to that would see me I made an appointment with. $325...Fill with no floro, he offered no nutritional advise or even what to eat after a fill. He is 3 hours away from me. I live in Mobile, Al so I can go to Panhandle of Florida, Mississippi or Louisiana. We get cheap airflights from here to Houston, but then I have to stay overnight and a taxi. HELP!!!! I know there has to be someone out there!!!

I know someone from OR who had LB surgery in Tijuana, Mexico and goes to WA and pays $375.00 per fill. Ouch!! There are no doctors in her area at all, so she's stuck!

I guess they don't want to take chances so you pay more.

Hope you find someone closer. I feel for you!

Take care,

Christina

Wow! I cant even imagine paying that much for a fill. I got lucky, my Dr. is right down the street from me and since I did the surgery with him he only charges me $50 a fill and $125 for floro if i need it...but i have only needed it once.

I really hope you find someone cheaper...thats crazy prices for some fluid!

If you know this person who is in Oregon, my doctor charges $160 for fills. He charges $10,000 for the surgery which isn't that much more expensive that Mexico. Plus he gives free fills for his patients.

Krystal,

Good for you getting back on track! I am recently banded March 12, 2007

so we can begin the journey together! I wont get my first fill until April 26, 2007. I cant wait thoug because I am getting more hungry.

When I get hungry I try to eat a filling Protein that will stay with me a while. I need to exercise more, like daily. I really think that goes a long way in helping speed things up and keeps us toned.

Girl hang in there! You Can Do It!

Could you please tell me the name and address of the doctor in OR, and I will tell my friend so she won't have to go to WA anymore and pay the high price for a simple fill. Do you know for sure this doctor accepts patients who have had their surgery in Mexico?

Please let me know asap..

Thanks,

Christina

what is floro?

Floro is also known as floroscope.......its another term used to do a fill under an xray machine. You drink some stuff and it goes down and shows your stamache to the Dr so he can see how the liquid goes in your stamache....Most Doctors do this to find your port because they may not be able to get it in the Dr office.

I had to have this done once and ever since the dr has no problem finding it on me.

My doc charges 300 for fills if your insurance pays, 150 if your on your own. I know, why does he charge the ins company more? I dont care honestly because even though they "paid" for my surgery there was still a couple thousand not coverd and they dont pay for aftercare which is rediculous, so screw em! He also saves a lot of money in admin fees if he dosent have to submut anything, so I guess he sees it as cheaper for him if I pay cash.

So, being on my own, its 150. For floros' I go to a surgery center that charges 50 bucks if you dont put it through insurance. I learned about this after it cost over 400 bucks in the radiology department in the hospital, of which I still paid more then 50 bucks after deductibles and what not.

My fills are covered for a year. AFter that I'm not sure, but my doc seems to think unless I need and unfill, I won't need any adjustments after that time period. I have the smaller band.

I live in CA and I had my surgery in TJ with Dr. Kuri, I went 3 times for fills with him, it was free but it was an all day process. Get on the plane from Sac to San Diego, get on the bus to downtown, take the trolley to the border, get a taxi to his office. Finally get a fill, pay 50 if I ended up needing flouro. Get back in taxi, get on trolley, get bus, get back on plane, get home. Whole process would take from 3 am to 7 pm. Found a Dr. McKeen in San Jose, charges 325 fill adjustments, requested a copy of surgery notes directly from Dr. Kuri office for his files. Has worked with lots of Dr. Kuri patients. My new process make appoint, drive 1.5 hours have fill, drive 1.5 back. Whole process takes 4 hours. I've gone to him twice.

I'm 4 years out and have had a fill and slight unfil in the past year. After ps I will probably have another slight fill.

They bill my insurance $600 for each fill, whether I get fluro with it or not. That is just ridiculous. My doctor made me pay $80 for my part last time, the time before that $50. When I went to the surgicenter, and they do fluro each time, I only had to pay $20. This seems like such a rip off to me. Cash patients are free for a year, but insured patients are really paying. I hope I don't have to go as often soon.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
