I don't think pizza is that horrible, Healthwise, if you stick to one slice and don't eat it daily. It combines a lot of different food groups that are considered healthy, in moderation. I also think the nice thing about the lapband is that you CAN eat most "normal" foods (and not live on chicken breasts and salads forever), and still lose weight. You just can't eat much. Living on "diet" foods and being very restrictive is, IMO, potentially problematic. For me, if I deprive myself entirely of any food that's not not completely weight-watcherish, I am going to deal with more cravings and weird eating behavior.

Dislexi, what do you mean, eat 2 oz? I am under the impression that each meal (once healed) will be about the equivalent of 3/4ths cup.

So it's been a while for me, but I saw Berry's name and knew he always had interesting threads.

So im glad to see other people are like me. I to just had it done and do not have a fill. I am just now starting to try more and more food. I have eaten pizza already, but bread and red meat does not work. I can eat hamburger meat and chicken no problem. Now I am finally going to get my post op check up tomorrow. So I have no idea how much weight I have lost.

I was worried that I was able to eat food with no problem. I know that will change when I get fills. But im very glad to see others are eating just like me.

I think it's odd that you paid all this money, went through the pain of the surgery and want to go back to old eating habits, pizza, hamburger and the like. Why? :faint:

JeninCo, don't you think that over-eating is the real problem, for most people here? Not a hamburger here and there, or a slice of pizza, etc. - but the amount? In other words, a McDonald's burger is ok once a month, but not every other day.

I have been a fatty for a long time and I stand by the theory that the most successful eating plans (for losing weight) are not all about carrot sticks and lean meats. They are about variety, moderation and exercise. Strict food limits, IMO, is a recipe for trouble.

It's different for everyone, I just thought getting banded was a way to get healthy. pizza and hamburgers is nice once in a great while, but it's not exactly health food. Pizza being the one food I could live on happily, I'm a little afraid of tackling it!

I have the smaller band and I am post 1st fill 13 days. I have had one slice of pizza.. sort of. I got a fork and only at the top.. NOT the crust.

Yes, once in a great while is what I meant too. I think we are in agreement. But I fully intend to indulge in an occasional treat. I think it's unrealistic to live like a food monk! lol!

I had my surgery in December. At the time I thought I wanted to lose 40lbs, but since losing 37 I know I want at least 10 more. I keep my meals to 1/4 cup and thats plenty. I feel so good eating healthy foods like lean protien and veggies. I don't consider them "diet" foods at all. I actually visulize a meal as fuel for my body and nourishment for my complexton. On the other hand I visulize foods like pizza and hamburgers as greasy viscous fat that is going to set up like glue around my band and give me heartburn. It's just my own mindset that I find very helpful and healthful. No judgements on anyone else intended.

I can't be an all or nothing bandster. That is why I was banded. I ate 1/2 of a slice of pizza last night and was stuffed. If you eat what you want and not go over your daily caloric intake you should be fine. Happy pizza. Julie

Everything in moderation!!

I'm not banded yet, (waiting on insurance approval) but the way I see it, if I want a piece of pizza, and my band can tolerate it, I'm going to have it. The key is "moderation" I wont eat half the pizza like I have in the past, but a slice or even half a slice will suffice.

I've got a new mantra that I keep repeating to myself..."The first bite tastes the same as the last bite" and sometimes you just need to have that taste of something to squash the cravings.

For those that cant give up pizza entirely, Papa Murphy's has a pizza that you can take home and bake it yourself...its a specialty pizza that has half the carbs and calories as their normal thin crust pizza. The crust on the pizza is as thin as the cardboard backings on notebooks...you get all the flavor of the pizza with the very minimal amount of crust. (I've tried it and its really good!!) This is my product review for the week!! LOL

Maybe the fact that dislexi only had 40-50 pounds to lose makes her think differently. Most of us have 100ssssss to lose. And I for one, will never make it unless I am able to eat things I like in small quantities on occasion. Eating chicken breast and salad for months and then bingeing on unhealthy foods is what caused my yoyo dieting and gain of 150 pounds over the years. I love my band because I can eat what I want, watch my calories and Protein and still lose weight. If I thought I had to eat chicken breast and salad for the rest of my life I might as well die right now.

THis is a life diet for me....not just to lose a few pounds, but many pounds and then be able to control my eating to keep those pounds off.

Just my opionion.

Im having pizza tonight! NICE !! JeninCO I had the surgery done to help me control the amount of food I eat and loose some weight in the process. I did not get it to completly deprive myself of the food I love so much. I am a guy who loves red meat and has a mindset that thinks Vitamin pills won't really give me the nutrients I need. Now I can't eat hamburgers, but I can eat hamburger meat and chicken no problem. I know people say that vitamis work just as well, but to me I want the real thing. I want the meat and vegtables and fruit. I want the taste of them, not some chewable pill. Don't cheat yourself, treat yourself.

I have not tried pizza chain pizza yet. I have only eaten homemade because I can make the crust real thin and crispy. Reading this, mabye I could try a slice of thin crust Pizza Hut pepperoni.. mmm..... man I miss those days, pizza and a Dr Pepper w/ lots of ice! Damn that was some good eating.

O I forgot, a job with DAMN good Insurance helps alot! I was fortunate enough not to have to pay anything out of pocket except Dr visits. Round of applause for United Health Care !!!!

I was able to handle two small slices of thin crust with light cheese and light sauce, topped with green pepper, grilled chicken and Tomato. It took about 20 minutes to finish them both, but I tolerated them well. And I lost an extra pound to boot!

Is this a frozen pizza or something from a restaurant? I LOVE pizza but it doesn't love my band. :)

Papa Murphy's makes the pizzaria type pizzas, but they dont bake them. You bring them home and bake them yourself....check out this link and see if they have a store near you!!

I know I might get grief for this and I have not been banded very long. However, I just don't remember things like roast beef or pizza as part of the menu plan while the stitches inside the stomache heal. It just seems odd to start right out of the gate with the foods that made us fat in the first place. I for one do not intend to deprive myself, but I also want to give my body a chance to heal.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
