3 months post op and stalled

Recommended Posts

I know this is normal but it is frustrating. I am 3 months out and have not lost any weight in 2 weeks and it is making me depressed to the point I feel like I am eating when I shouldn't. I snack on bites of a Protein bar thru out the day. I went for my 3 month dr visit last week and had to get a whole bag of iv fluids cause I was severally dehydrated.

Just feeling sad :(

Hey stranger!

I am noticing the same thing. Drinking has always been a challenge, so I added straws. Much easier. Quest bars have become sliders for me, so I am eliminating them for a while, and nuts too. It's been challenging to stay within my calorie limits, especially with the need to drop my insulin levels. (Reactions all over the map!)

Step away from the scale for a while. I've been away for 2 weeks, but will probably need to face the music this week. Keep your chin up--you're a month behind me and you've lost more! You're doing great!

Are either of you measuring yourselves? If so, are you losing inches? If you are losing inches you are not stalled. ;)

I am definitely losing inches, and I know I am losing, but I try not to weigh too often, or I lose my mind.

I did not measure last week or this week but I will tonight I had been losing inches as well. My doctor still says no straws cause I know I would do a lot better if I could use a straw. My blood sugars are still running on the higher side for the most part. My A1C was not as good as we hoped for it was 7.4.

Stalls are frustrating and can be very demoralizing. I agree with taking a vacation from the scale for a while and get someone to do good measurements on you (try not to measure yourself). Focus on how you feel physically compared to when you started and remember stalls are the body's way of realigning/shifting/altering body composition. Just after 2 months my weight loss has slowed down significantly and I hit a low patch yesterday, so I understand the disappointment. Keep your head up, shoulders back and keep pushing. Make sure you are tracking your intake and push the fluids-this is one of the hardest for me, to be frank, I suck at my fluids. <hugs> and much luck hun. You CAN do this!

it just scares me that I know I should not be snacking in between my meals and I am probably getting too many calories in. I need to start tracking them.

Tracking intake keeps me way more accountable than weighing ever did--I set it so my friends can look at my food diary but you can keep it private on MFP. Once you get into the habit, it will make all those little calories throughout the day really add up and you can get an honest picture of what you are eating. It is a tool just like the scale and just like our surgeries...we have years of bad habits to overcome and years of denial to face and that is daunting. One step at a time, one day at a time and never be afraid to dust yourself off and get back up on the horse-he isn't doing anything but waiting for you to get back on and ride :)

I wouldn't be able to live without "my fitness pal" if your honest when using it it is an amazing tool!

The stalls have been freaking me out too, I just try to remember to keep exercising I'd some way and to do my best to get all my Protein and fluids in.

Good luck! I know you can do it :)

But 7.4 is a lot better for you, isn't it? I get my first post-op A1C next week. I am eager to see it. If you're doing a lot of snacking and not tracking, try MFP. It helps remind me to check my blood and check my carbs. Mainly, I use it for calories, and can't go without it. (I guess I use it the way others use the scale.) It keeps me honest and focused. It reminds me to reach for the sugar free popsicle instead of something calorie-laden.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
