Thinking of Quitting- I'm overwhelmed

Recommended Posts

I said all that to say that this is what they do to prepare for bypass surgery for ppl with fatty livers and it works even better so it's now it's own stand alone procedure. You will be fine If you ate a lil bit but if u tell, protocol may have rescheduled.

I believe the doctors know that in the two week diet we will not be perfect. If we were any good good at following diets, we wouldn't be here. I think the reason they do this is to put us in a certain mind set. I had my surgery 4/2, BUT I had my first date of 2/5 rescheduled pending a sleep test. Then I had surgery scheduled for March 19. I was sent home from the OR because I was getting over a cold. At this point I started to think that the powers that be were trying to tell me something. They rescheduled me for 4/2 and I was thinking I might die, but I continued praying and asking God to please take care of me and guide the surgeons. I was so frustrated from the being on and off the preop diet that the last time around I just ate salads and my Protein shakes with some light snacking in the evening. I did follow the 48 hour liquid diet before surgery because the stomach does need to be empty for surgery.

Bottom line is all went better than I dreamed of. I had the expected pain but it was totally tolerable. The incisions didn't hurt at all. I just had some moderate right side pain which got better every day, and I have been taken off all blood pressure meds since discharged from the hospital!! I am 11 days post op and 14 lbs down feeling like myself again. The first 7 days post op are mentally difficult because you still think of food A LOT but trust me, no matter how much you want it, reality kicks in, you can't have it. I was so hungry I had a couple of baby spoons of split pea Soup which I regretted. I was sick for 24 hours.

Don't think to hard. God is on your side and the doctors know why you are there. Just make sure you absolutely follow the 48 hour liquid diet before surgery and do the best you can with the 2 week diet. You will be just great!! Believe it in your heart. Ask. Believe. Receive.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like you are eating fries and chocolate. I think most doctors know that some of us are going to cheat, and that if cheating means eating some peas and egg whites that's ok.

They know we are food addicts or we wouldn't be fat.

The first week I had a little but of chicken breast every other day. The second week I didn't cheat but I was miserable. The weekend before I was basically in bed because I was avoiding anything food related and I felt like crap.

Some surgeons only make their patients do shakes and veggies, some only do three days of liquids.

You will be fine. It will be ok.

After surgery you won't be able to eat anything. You won't want to. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Hey I cheated several times and had a small plate of food for Christmas dinner and was still sleeved three days later. It's not worth going through the process again so do your best and show up surgery day with your big panties on and don't look back. The worst your surgeon can do is tell you no try again. Don't go in on surgery day like your trying to confess your sins either (lol) Keep your head up and don't sweat the cheating. You will be just fine!!! I'm 3 months out 54 lbs down and I weigh 143lbs. Hope this motivates you

My dr did not require any liquid diet before surgery. I was just not allowed to eat or drink anything after midnight the day of surgery. I ended up eating a sub to say goodbye the night before surgery. I was sleeved 4/3.

I'm so overwhelmed right now. I started this Journey in Feb and I have a date scheduled for the 23rd. I am supposed to be on my 2 week liquid diet and I keep cheating. Granted i'm not cheating with anything bad, I am eating Protein (egg white, chick peas) but none the less, I am not sure if I should tell my dr. i'm cheating or not. If I can't do this, how can I manage post-op???

I know I have to do this, I just know I can't do 2 weeks of no food and straight Protein shakes (which make me gag soo bad). What do I do??? I know some dr's do the 2 week some don't, I asked my dr. and he said they do recommend it but "do as you wish" which basically is telling me, your a grown up suck it up.

I"m confused, sad, alone and just friggin disappointed.

I'm on day 3 of Protein Drink for 10 day diet. Premier is the best flavor. costco has them. I did ALOT of taste tests. I like vanilla because you can add non sugar pudding to flavor it for variety. You only need a teaspoon for flavor change! You can have the chocolate and add instant coffee for a coffee treat.

Same for me. No food or drink after midnight so I have planned a few food funerals for everyday this week until surgery date 4/23 but only for dinner...starting with Carrabbas chicken Bryan!!! Yummy

It's amazing how different practices have different requirements. Before surgery, I had to do two weeks of 1200 calories a day, & 2 days of a full liquid diet.< /p>

My doc only required a preop diet for 2 weeks and it wasn't liquid, but it was very high Protein and very low carb. (and obviously, I couldn't eat after midnight the day of surgery) The point is to shrink your liver to make surgery easier. If you aren't eating snickers bars and are eating healthy Protein, I wouldn't sweat it at all.

The first couple of days are the hardest! You can do it you just need some variety. I like the GNC vanilla Protein powder it has more protein then premier and I added a teaspoon of instant Decaf coffee. After 4 days I wasn't even hungry.

I hate the use of the word, "cheating". You are making choices, period. If you set yourself up to fail, you will. If you are lingering in indecision about the choices you are making, then yes, postpone the surgery. Once you are healed 3-4 months out, you will start making bad choices again if you don't decide that you can do this successfully.

Dear Hopeful,

DON'T QUIT! DONT'T QUIT! DON'T QUIT! Oh my goodness, you are going to have SUCH A TOTALLY DIFFERENT food EXPERIENCE AFTER YOUR SURGERY - YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT look at how you are feeling now and come to the conclusion that you can't do post-op nutrition properly!! It's a completely new game afterwards, hon! That's why you're going to succeed!

You said yourself that not all doctors require the 2 weeks post-op liquids. Mine sure didn't. I ate a normal Breakfast everyday (Kashi Go Lean with skim milk), then I ate Protein, fruits & veggies for lunch & dinner. I tried to make 1/2 of my meal Protein, which is what I do now at 4 1/2 months post-op. I dropped a pound a day on this diet, and I was so psyched for surgery that I didn't even worry about eating microscopic size portions. You'll be doing that afterwards by choice, believe me! If it makes you feel better, my partner from work actually gained 10 pounds during the month before surgery, and she still lost 100 pounds in 8 months and achieved her goal. It sounds to me like you are doing GREAT! Now stop torturing yourself and enjoy the solid food while you can. You won't want anything like that after you wake up from surgery!

Oh, and don't panic about protein shakes tasting like garbage! Your tastes will change so much after surgery - it's really hard to know what might appeal to you afterwards. I did enjoy a book by the Bariatric Foodie - her Guide to Perfect Protein Shakes gave me lots of clever ideas about how to make protein shakes tastes less like discount store melted ice cream stored in the trunk of my car for a week.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
