So I'm scheduled surgery on Monday 4/7 and now that I've read some seriously horrible stories on here, I'm considering canceling my surgery! I was already scared and now I'm petrified! I want to do this for a better quality of life not to be sick or die!!! I don't know what to do now...I'm so confused and afraid to make the wrong decision!

I'm close to 3 weeks out, so far this is the best decision I could make. I regret that I didn't do this sooner. Follow your gut instinct, only you know what's best for you.

I'm 6 weeks out and even though I still have a one incision pain, I'd totally go through it all again, every year if I had to I'm down 50 lbs and I wish I would have done it earlier.

The problem is I don't know what my gut is telling me to do! I'm 100 lbs overweight and I've been struggling my whole life with weight! I want to be healthier so I can enjoy life with my girls but I'm so afraid of dying and not being here to see them grow up! :(

I am 8 days out and doing great. One or two stories about a bad experience does not outweigh the hundreds of thousands of positive stories. I would not change my decision for anything. Your going to die someday if it's your time it's your time. Don't be afraid it's really not to bad. Yes there are down sides. Death is the last thing you should be thinking about.

Had I read some of these stories I might have changed my mind out but on day 28 I am doing well and am glad I did it, I would definitely do it again! I chickened out 3 times before I finally decided I was too young to be this unhealthy. I hope you think it's through and maybe read some more good stories before canceling. Good Luck with whichever decision you make. ????

There is a greater risk of dying pulling out of your drive way than dying from this surgery. Don't be scared. This is nothing compared to heart surgery or any of the many surgeries you may have to get if you remain overweight.

kclaws I am pre-surgery so can't share any real experience with you but I can tell you that there is risk associated with ALL surgery. You could go in for a simple tonsilectomy, and have a complication. There are tons of real stories on these boards - both good and bad. Only you can decide whether you think this is right or wrong for you. Good luck!

You need to ask yourself what health risk is greater? Wls or being obese along with the comorbidities that go along with obesity. My surgeon showed me statistics that reflected vsg surgery having less complications than gallbladder surgey and csections. Considering I've had both I felt ok to go thru with it

I've had gall bladder surgery as well but that was 15 years ago. I was feeling better about it and I personally know 1 person who has had the sleeve, a few hon have had gastric bypass and a few who had lapband, they all survived without any major complications.

Thanks for all of your advice and support. I was starting to feel better about it until tonight.

I had the surgery to keep from dying of the complications from being 100 pounds overweight, which already caused one stroke. For all the issues you read about on the forum, you will hear stories like mine. I had NO post-op gas pain, and have had a textbook recovery. I started full liquids as soon as I came home, started soft foods 1 1/2 weeks after that, and started regular food at 3 1/2 weeks.

Yeah, there may be a little pain where the incisions are healing, but there are so many benefits from having this done. I just passed my halfway mark this week. I feel so much better. I get around easier, my range of motion in my knees is better, I can roll over in bed easier, and can get on the floor now to do pilates and therapy exercises. Eating high Protein and low carb has made my body sytems run better, too.

This surgery SAVED MY LIFE!.

I was very scared about dying myself! That was probably my only concern lol Mind you I had 2 operations, I had the lap band and then my revision to the gastric sleeve so I had double the "panic/scare". But at the end of the day, I looked around and saw that everybody else came out alive and did very well. And I also knew the risks were very low for someone like me. I prayed and I believed that I would be alright. Sometimes you have to let go and believe with all your heart that you will be alright, and not only that, you will be very successful with your tool. Because alot of people do forget to realize that this is just a "tool". So pray not only to have a sucessful surgury day, but also to lose weight and keep it off! Everything else (your fears) will only be major distractions and are geared to throw u off track, stay focused :)

Everybody is different. I had no problems, I was up walking around the recovery room 45 mins after surgery. No pain in my stomach at all only a lil pain in my left shoulder from gas. I was doing so well I was sent home the day after surgery. Today makes 1 week & im still doing awesome.

Dont give up, u can do this. I was scared a lil after reading stuff her. I just prayed & keep the faith. I wasn't even scared when I walked into the surgery room.

There can possibly be complications with any surgery but with WLS the complications are rare. The complications from obesity are about 100% and what doesn't kill you will cause great limitations to your quality of life. As my dad always said... "Pick your poison".

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
