personally I wish people would stop bashing one or the other wls.. they all have drawbacks. I know people like to have a contest to see how they have the best wls but honestly it gets old . The lapband has been very successful for many people. There are veterans on here who have lost hundreds of pounds and are living a healthy life. There are people I know who have had the bypass and are doing fine. The success of each depends on the patient. I have people in my support group that have had complications and issues with the sleeve and others who have done fine. so please people it's not a contest and if you can't just say I had "such and such" and I am doing fine without bashing or criticizing others decisions than don't say anything. It gets tiresome and frankly that is why many people quit posting and quit visiting this site.

I don't think it's inappropriate for people to express their reasoning for not choosing a specific WLS, just because you don't like their reasoning doesn't mean they are bashing it.

Kristina I think everyone has opinions like navels but I don't necessarily want to keep reading the same drivel about which WLS is best. If you are happy with your Bypass or whatever good, otherwise don't tell me that the Lapband is bad.. I am tired of the "know it alls" telling everyone else

the horror stories or whatever. I signed up for lapband discussions and that is why I don't go on the other sites and tell them I think it was wrong for them to have their stomach's rearranged or cut out.. I say whatever works for you is just fine... don't care if you think I"m right or wrong.

Well I hear you. I too am dietetic. I was undecided untill I went for my pe op visit. After going through that and speaking with everyone I knew bypass was what I needed to do for me. I have been on the opti for 6 days and have already cut out one pill and over half my insulin has been dialed back so far. For me its the only way to go to save my life because if I keep going heart attack or stroke is imminent. This is seriously the biggest decision of my life. My surgery date is April 22nd and it cant come soon enough for me. Good luck

it's okay ren. I don't mind if people make comparisons without being critical of other peoples decisions. Diabetes is a serious disease and I hope only the best for anyone who has it. I actually made the decision to have weight loss surgery based on my diabetes and the affects it has on my health. I was not super morbidly obese and my bmi was lower than a lot of patients but I had come to the end of my rope with losing and gaining weight. my aci was higher everytime I had bloodwork and I was on the brink of taking insulin. so happily I made the decision to get my lapband surgery and I am extremely happy that I did.

I wish the very best for you in your Quest to improve your health. PLease check back in with us and let us know how you are doing.

I debated between the bypass and the sleeve and finally decided on the sleeve. It has less complications for the future in regards to possible nutritional deficiencies and risks of ulcers and hernias of the intestines. I found that the sleevers lose just as much weight as the bypass in the long run and actually have much less risk of stretching out the sleeve vs the pouch of the bypass imho. I personally didn't want the side effect of diarhea that a lot of bypass pts. endure. And it's a foul smelling diarrhea at that. I've seen bypass patients get very sickly if they were not careful and also notice that they age considerably in appearance afterwards from what I've seen I would never get the lapband.... Ive seen more failure cases than any of the surgeries. You know after a couple of years the bypass often stops working as far as the malabsorbtive feature goes. Be sure to read all you can about both surgeries. I know that complications can occur with any of these surgeries but inmo the sleeve is the safest. I think I made the right decision for me. What I love about the sleeve is that they take the portion of the stomach away that cause hunger hormones (Grehlin) They do not do this for the bypass. With both surgeries strict compliance is the key to success of course. I have also read that sleeve patients have also been able to be cured of their Diabetis. but if you happen to gain yur weight back after surgery the Diabetis will return again like it did for Carnie Wilson.

The cure for diabetis is contigent on losing excess weight and keeping it off it seems. If you gain back 2/3 of the weight or more or less the high blood sugar can return at any time. This is not a permanent do nothing cure for diabetes...... I have read a lot about this already

I've known too many people have to have the band removed for a sleeve. Additionally I believe the stats for diabetes resolution are low with the lap band.

Because they "can" have it removed is why many chose the band.

I never looked into any research. My lung doctor made my appointment and said you are getting the band. I found this site after the surgery. I love my band. I did not want my insides cut/removed either. Good luck with your new journey and only you can decide what is perfect for your life and body. Just remember all WLS is a tool and people have failed with all if them, too.

There are an awful lot of lapband folks that are now having it revised to bypass, for a variety of reasons. I take that in two ways ... You could always start with lapband and if it doesn't work, get bypass. Or just do it all in one sweep and bypass. Thats what I did.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
