Fat Doctor on youtube-awesome show!

Recommended Posts

just wanted to throw out there this info...on youtube there is a great show from the UK called Fat Doctor. MANY episodes uploaded and no commercials. It is similar to 'my 600 lb life' however these people weigh anywhere from about 275 up to 450, so it is way more comparable to many of us getting surgery.

I have been watching the episodes this weekend as I am really focused on educating myself as MUCH as possible as I prepare for my surgery. FYI- there are VERY graphic scenes of the surgery itself but it is also a great view into what exactly happens-being a nurse it didn't bother me at all.

Just wanted to pass this along as I thought that it was really great to find such a wealth of info from the shows. btw, 1 stone=14 lb.

Hi there

I need a friend, I am in the UK, and my operation is scheduled for May 6th, ironically my surgeon is one of the Fat Doctors from the show - I am paying for the op myself and researched the best surgeons and Shaw Somers and his team are the best here. However, although I know I have a great surgeon, Im terrified, truly - what worries me is the post surgery part, even in years to come, the risks of bleeding and ulcers and adhesions causing the need for more surgery up the track, are these big risks or very slight risks? I would rather be fat than die in agony or be in and out of hospital for horrid scary things....

Can anyone at all, help me make sure Im doing the right thing?

Hollie

I am sure you will make the right choice for yourself, we are here for you and will be your friend.

honestly I don't know that I have really heard of anybody with long term complications like adhesions. hopefully you will be so incredibly pleased afterward. I have many co-workers who have been through and cannot speak enough positive about it!

just from watching the show my opinion is that Dr Somers seems incredibly compassionate and TRULY cares about his patients. I think that you are VERY blessed to have him as a doctor, and he seems to truly have a gift from God in helping his clients. I think that he has a true dedication to helping obese people become healthy. you should ask him about your concerns, but truly I believe that even if there are small risks of long-term problems, the fact that you are healthy weight-wise would outweigh those risks!

please feel free to reply or post any questions or issues that you have .i am still pre-op too but would love to help!

also, it seems like in my research the biggest risk of ulcers comes from post op patients who take aspirin products, ibuprofen, smoke, or drink a lot of alcohol...

my surgeon said to always just use Tylenol and it wouldn't be a problem

Thank you sooo much :) Well, I dont know what diet they give you pre op, but here I have been told for two weeks before surgery I have to drink nothing but milk¬ Bleurgh,,, it seems odd to tell someone who clearly has an eating disorder to lose weight before they do a surgery to help you lose weight lol,,, but I get it,, I guess the fear of them cutting your liver makes you not eat! here I am watching masterchef eating the whole bag of sugar free sweets, that I know will make me fart lol, they always do ! I cant wait to not want food ,, I really am sick of food - Does anyone know if this surgery raises your metabolism?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
