Period during surgery, please help!

Recommended Posts

I saw my surgeon today before my scheduled surgery on 3/31. I told her I had tried to schedule around my period... She started chuckling and I assumed it was related to this conversation we had been having in here. She said that no matter how hard women try to plan most women start their period on surgery day and it's nothing to worry about. Just hearing her say that made me feel a lot better about it. I'm a nurse and I know I would have no problem helping one of my patients with this. I don't know why I'm freaking out. I suppose because nurses are the worst patients.

Thought it would be gone by tomorrow but I don't think so. What am I supposed to do? I'm afraid I'm going to wake up in a mess because there are times I have to change tampon twice an hour.

Do they let you use a tampon or do you have to use pads?

Am i going to be able to change them after? Or will I be too sore and out if it?

THIS SUCKS!!!!!!

I started mine the day before. When I went to the hospital they gave me the disposable hospital panties and the hospital pads (long one). I woke up with both of them still on. They (the disposable panties) were actually very comfortable.

I'm so glad to have found this information because my surgery is about a week away and according to my calendar my period will begin the day before. I was worried because I won't be able to speak with my surgeon about my concerns until mid week. This is a weight off of my shoulders.

Yep puppy pad for the surgery and they'll likely put you in maternity pads after. Just think of it this way; they have already seen every part of you. In the grand scheme of things this is just a little hiccup.

You are right about that; they see it all!

I was on my period during surgery. I was required to take everything off. No pads or tampons during surgery. You lay on that blue puppy training pad thingy. You wake up with hospital panties and a pad on.
They are medical professionals. They've dealt with menstruation a lot. it's a big deal to you, a no brainier to them

The same happened to me. I woke up with a pad on. Also, according to my paperwork many women start during or soon after surgery. The nurses are use to it.

It will be alright, trust me. I had my surgery on 12/02/17, got my period in the morning so I took with me my overnight always pads which I feel comfortable in. I was so nervous and irritated that this had happened on surgery date. As I whispered these facts to the nurse as I was getting ready (taking clothes off to put hospital stuff), she handed over hospital panties and gave me a big weird pad, then said: it’s fine, this happens all the time, it’s usual and there is nothing to be ashamed off... I was so happy and relieved to have special panties and not worry about being fully out while on my period. To make things better, I asked if I could change to my own pads and they were like sure!! I was relieved! The pads from the hospital were not comfortable at all. I was so happy! Just take a few things with you and you will be fine: baby wipes and your own pads (in case you get your period too). You will be fine. Good luck!

I started the next day. HEAVY! And for like a week, when I’m never more than 3 Days!

I had lung surgery a few years ago and had my period. I was worried about that. I told the nurse in preop and it was no big deal. They deal with it all the time.

I’ve had irregular bleeding for months now, so I am fairly certain I will be bleeding the day of surgery. I wish a tampon was an option!! I despise pads with the fire of a thousand suns! Lol

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
