Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Recommended Posts

I had difficulty swallowing horse pills even pre-surgery and post-surgery I'm finding I can't tolerate liquid Vitamins (Feels like drinking lighter fluid!) or chewables. Today I threw up the first of 2 Bariatric Advantage chewables I intended to take - didn't even try to get the 2nd one down after the 1st came right back.

I take 3 meds in the a.m. that are capsules and I can keep those down so I looked for a capsule Vitamin tonight in the grocery store but didn't see any.

Does such a thing exist?

How about Vitafusion gummies? They taste great & no swallowing necessary!! They also make a great Fiber Gummy!

That's a great idea! My local grocery didn't have gummies so I didn't think of them. I found some Spring Valley gummies and they stayed down fine. I'll just have to find a good Iron supplement now.

I was told by my surgeon and my NUT that the gummies do not have everything in them that you need. They recommend Bariatric Advantage capsules with Iron - you can buy them online from Bariatric Advantage but I get mine from my doctor's office.

Rebecca, I agree Bariatric Advantage is a VERY complete multi-Vitamin. I started taking that brand pre-surgery. In the start of the thread, I stated that I am puking up my Bariatric Advantage Vitamins.

If you vomit your Vitamins, they aren't doing you any good - no matter how super complete and highly recommended they are.

I'm aware the gummies don't have Iron. That's why I said I need to find an iron. (An iron that is not a big dry capsule. That's what I meant by "horse pill".)

I realize the gummies don't have the same amount of many things as the B.A. brand, so I also got Gummy B complex and gummy D3s. (I was already taking sublingual B-12 & Calcium citrate chews and they were staying down fine.)

Maybe a taste aversion with the chewable a causing vomiting? I could not find a flavor of chewable that I liked. I do ok with the Bariatric Advantage capsules, maybe you could open the capsule (of this or an alternate brand) and put in a spoonful of something allowed by your program. Protein pudding, unsweetened applesauce, etc. hope you find something that stays down!!

I have only vomited once since surgery. That was with an empty stomach taking a sample bariatric Vitamin the surgeon gave me. I find that if I don't have good timing with my Vitamins and food in tummy I don't feel so great. Taking them with food and a tiny bit of Water helps me feel fine after taking them. Sounds like some of us don't tolerate vitamins on empty stomach, especially Iron. I hope that helps.

I think you are on to something! I've always taken a Multi-Vitamin with Iron and it's the Multivitamin that has been a BEAR; liquids, chewables, ground up in applesauce, it makes no difference. But I have no problem with B-12 or D3 or calcium citrate.

An empty stomach does seem to make it worse which is why I stopped taking it first thing in the morning - I figured taking it after Omeprazole and Ursodiol and some Protein would help. Nope!

I had thought it might be too acidic since many vitamins are acids, but if that was it, I should've had issues with the gummies, too, and they went down easily. It must be the iron.

Yes they do. I purchase my Vitamins from Vita4Life. They offer their bariatric range in fast dissolving capsules that are easy to swallow and absorb.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
