Anyone having surgery in May

Recommended Posts

My surgery is booked for May 6th with one of the fat doctors from the TV show here in the UK - but Im terrified of blood clots, bleeding, hernias adhesions, ruptures and god knows what else, am I doing the right thing? Does this surgery fix you short term but decrease your life expectancy because of lots of long term side effects from having your digestive system re built?

I have had a gastric band, I lost 6 stone (14 pounds in a stone) anyway, I looked and felt great, went and lived in LA for fun, and was an american size zero, worked out in the gym every day, and felt fab, then my dad died, I came back here to the UK, and then the climate and food and misery got to me, no more gym - replaced it with cakes, anyway, then my band slipped, and in Jan this year had it removed, now, Im back where I swore I would never be.... what do I do, do I dare to go ahead with what they say is more risky revision surgery or do I just slip into my fat invisible world.....

I'm scheduled May 19

I am scheduled on May 6th! Definitely ready! I started the process in August which was supposed to be a 6 month prep and evaluation time. I managed to hurt my foot increasing my activity and had surgery on that in January and it slowed everything down a bit. I am just very glad to finally have the date! The count down is going on my calendar. I start my liquid diet on the 22nd. I have things ready at home, Vitamins purchased and would have it tomorrow if I could!

Hello everyone

How are you guys doing? I'm excited, scared, nervous, worried & anxious for my surgery on May 19, 2014!!! Of course I'm counting down the days. Is anybody getting or already got the Insure Nutrition supplements that were covered by some insurances? And if so when? How far ahead are you guys putting in your claim?

Anybody have a goal in mind? Does your bariatric surgeon have a goal set for you? I think in terms of sizes I am currently an 18 and my dream size would be an 8. I was a 24/26 at my largest. The weight chart my doctor uses puts me at weighing between 125-135 for a healthy bmi at 5'4. My surgeon would like to see me between 150-160. The nutritionist I saw actually took into account my body frame by examining my wrists etc. She said I have a large frame and said I should weigh between 140-150. Anyhow in my mind 160 is good 150 is better and 140 is best. So how about you all?

Hi angel face

.. I'm 59 years young and my dr asked what my weight was in high school. I told him I was usually around 130 lbs . He sails realistically you should be able to get down to 145-150 . I love that idea! I am 5'2" and currently weigh 238 and in a size 22. I would be thrilled in a size 14, I'm not at all interested in being thin just healthy!

Hi everyone, I was told I'm having mine Mid-May however no exact date yet:(

Maybe you guys can give me some advise.......

I have two weeks vacation time and some personal time I was saving for surgery I need to take it before June 30, 2014 or I'll lose it!! Unfortunately I don't have the exact date and about 8 other co-workers also have time off they need to take and it's 1st come 1st serve bases should I wing it and just put in my time off for mid May or should I wait?

I would just call the surgeons office and let them know your situation and ask them if they have a tenative date from their end. Thats what I did and they gave me the date right away. Told me I would need to do the EGD and it had been scheduled and where then told me I needed to see the surgeon and nutritionalist and the date and date of surgery. Congrats by the way. My date is April 28th so I will be very happy when your date gets here whenever it is.

HI Cookie2014. it seems like May 5 is a pretty popular day. One we won't easily forget for sure. I start my pre-op diet on Monday....have to do all liquids for 2 weeks. I'm getting excited. Do you have a pre-op diet you have to do?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
