Post op Thrush. Probiotics? Help.

Recommended Posts

One week post op and have developed thrush. Called the surgeon yesterday and they told me to call my PCP. I called PCP who is also a friend and told him I have thrush (I am a nurse and I am 100% certain this is thrush) so he called me in Nystatin. Directions say to Swish and Swallow. It didn't dawn on me that I am swallowing into a new stomach and wondered if it was ok. I will call my surgeon tomorrow just to be certain. I searched this site for threads on Thrush and didn't come up with anything but saw a few thread on other sites. Some say not to swallow because of the sugar in the med. And some took Probiotics. That site made it sound like it was somewhat common to get after a Sleeve. Anyone have any thoughts on what I might do? My throat hurts so I am certain it is farther down that just my tounge. Anyone have advice about Probiotics this close out of surger?. My mouth tastes TERRIBLE! I can't tolerate my CPAP because of how horrid my mouht tastes when it dries out (mine gets really dry from my CPAP). I am doing well otherwise but just curious what others have experienced.

My nut wanted us on drinkable yogurt and probiotics ASAP after surgery. My PCP suggested something more than just your basic acidophilus products you can get OTC. Instead, he urged me to find a higher quality, refrigerated, multi-strain product. Florajen 3 was available at the local pharmacy (no Rx needed) and better yet, I found 33 strain / 50 billion CFU capsules from Garden of Life at the local health food store. I've been fighting a C. diff infection for almost 2 months so I have become somewhat of a probiotic expert.

I was prescribed Nystatin swish n' swallow as a prophylactic for both before and after surgery. I had no problems with it.

This may sound weird, but I sprinkled sea salt on my tongue a couple times a day. It burns a little, but the thrush is gone in a few days. I get thrush after every surgery( c-section, band, sleeve). Nystatin makes me gag/vomit.

Changes to the normal flora within our digestive tract - partly from surgery and partly from antibiotics used. You are not alone!

U can also gargle with bi carb soda each morning. It fizzes up so only use small amount. Then spit. Worked a treat for my dad and it's CHEAP

Really? Id be willing to try anything....do you mean 'baking soda?' Thanks for the advice.....i need to know the best way to irradiate this...

I have never heard of this. What is Thrush and does it happen to vertical patients? I'm six weeks post op. Am I out of the woods? I just started taking a probiotic yesterday.

I had the liquid nystatin too. I had to rinse and spit. It cleared up nicely. Tasted nasty...

Yes baking soda. Sorry. Lol.

Thrush is a fungal infection.

Is it common with this surgery? Why do people get it from surgery?

@@lapnicky it's a common result of any gastrointestinal surgery -- I think because your gut flora is disrupted, you get a broad spectrum antibiotic via IV (the antibiotic encourages thrush) and your mouth and throat can have some microscopic tears etc. from the intubation, and all that together allows thrush to flourish.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
