My mom won't stop telling people...

Recommended Posts

I'm one week post op today! For my insurance I had to wait 9 months so I've been at this for almost a year. The whole time I've been very private about who I tell. My first clue was Christmas when I finally told my sister and It turned out she already knew and was mad I had not told her yet. I had a talk with my mom after that and told her this was very private for me and it was my business who I told and didn't. She got super mad and started going on about family and being proud of what I'm doing. So this past week I've been getting text and phone calls from family and once again she got all mad "why wouldn't you want your aunt to know, she's not going to judge you" because its my business and I'm not ready to tell the whole world... I'm not sure what else I can say to her to get her to stop.....

My mom is the same way. I reluctantly told her after my sister talked me into it. She's been incredibly supportive, but she's also told everyone she's met. It's a major topic of conversation at her retirement park in Arizona. I called her one day and she was talking to the mom of an old HS Friend of mind whom I hadn't seen in 20+ years. Guess what they were talking about! The Christmas card I got from my aunt had a little note in it wishing me luck with my surgery. I told her to stop it but she hasn't. I've got two big mouth friends that also told dozens of other mutual friends so pretty much everyone knows. Fortunately everyone has been supportive and several are curious as to the details of my surgery and post op life. "You are so skinny now....bitch. Wish I was brave enough to do that too." is a phrase I hear a lot.

I waited until the last minute then told my ex. We share joint custody of teens, and he needed to know. I asked him not to share it with anyone, but true to form, it became a topic he felt compelled to talk about. I get a phone call from his sister's husband and it goes something like...."I heard you just did something really drastic...what the he..ll were you thinking. You could have done it through Weight Watchers or something."

Yes, I was disappointed and bummed....but you can't change a leopard's spots. I kinda knew the Beans would get spilled.

And this is EXACTLY why I told my mother the sum total of bugger all about my surgery.

Mothers are old. They're bored. They have nothing left of interest to discuss within their own lives... So they start vicariously using their kids lives as a topic of interest.

My mother did this to me once before in a very different context. I warned her most sternly - 'do it again and I will tell you nothing personal about my life from this point onwards'.

Guess what - she did it again. Subsequently, I tell her very very little. Its quite sad, because it has ruined our relationship. But it was her choice.

I gave her options. I gave her the consequences of her actions. She made her choice. She now has to live with it.

I didn't tell my mother. She needled me about losing weight for 40 years and still would have complained about my having surgery to do so.

Also she'd have told half the people in North America and she usually provides details inaccurately.

Glad I didn't tell her.

I feel the same way you do as far as wanting to keep it private. Why is it so freaking hard to understand "don't tell anyone"? Makes me wish I hadn't told anyone at all. My boyfriend has already told his friends who I specifically told him NOT to tell. Now its only a matter of time before everyone else knows. It's not his damn business to tell. He says he had to tell them to explain why he was sluggish at work. Really?! Helping with your daughter for a week is effecting work?

Sorry, using this to vent lol.

At first I was private about telling people, but after about 6 months and losing 100 lbs I tell everyone that asks my weigh loss secret. You should be able to tell who you want in your own time. My mom told everyone too :*(

I'm telling everyone I'm having my gallbladder removed and when that's over I'm really going to focus on getting back in shape!!! Lol. My mom always told me. What others don't know won't hurt me!! Let 'em wonder!!! Too many fricking busy bodies that need to worry about themselves and not what we decide to do.

My mom is amazing, and she is a great support. But she tells EVERYONE about my surgery. If we go out to eat and I don't order, she tells the waitress that I've had WLS and I'll just pick off her plate, like I'm 4. Or when I don't finish my meal, she tells them I had most of my stomach removed and can't eat much and that I will need a box, then she proceeds to ask me why I don't request one when I order my food. (sometimes my dad eats whatever I have left over, so no box is needed). She added me to the prayer list at church, and instead of just listing surgery or medical issues, she actually had it printed in the bulliten that I had WLS. I don't even attend there on a regular basis. But now when I visit, people ask me if I'm the WLS daughter, and how much I have lost. It's crazy. I HAD to tell my mom, she helped with my daughter while I was in the hospital, my hubs works a lot of over night shifts, and my daughter was only 11 when I had surgery.

That is exactly my story too, and my mom strongly encouraged not to share with anybody. Smart woman, love her so much, she helps me with my journey tremendously!

I feel for all of you, it must be horrible. It is really a big life change and a lot to deal with, the last thing I would want to do is keep explaining myself to everybody and listen to their comments :/

Sorry I have to laugh at your post...sounds just like my mom. The whole telling strangers in a restaurant and I, too, am known as the WLS daughter in her community.

To tell you the truth, though, it really doesn't bother me. I am more comfortable accepting compliments and talking to the people that do know than I am facing the people that don't know because I feel guilty about lying if I don't disclose my "weight loss secrets".

Oh it's not like I kept it a secret. I am very open about my situation, but when I mention it to a waitress I am discreet about it, not my mom, she is loud and makes sure everyone around hears.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
