Need help finding protein shakes/powder! Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

On Tuesday I have to start my Pre Op Diet and I've been sampling some different Protein shakes and powders. Everything I have tried has either left an awful after taste all day, or made me really sick to my stomach to the point I felt like I couldn't hold them down. I don't like the unjury powders at all and can't even handle them. I'm hoping to find something I really like this weekend so I can stock up on it for my 2 week diet and not have to deal with all of this during that time..I'm sure I'll already be feeling pretty crappy from the huge change in diet.

Any recommendations? If you know the amount of Protein in your suggestion let me know in the comments, and where you bought it. Thanks so much!

Most people like Premier Protein shakes. That's what I use. I buy mine at Kroger, but Amazon, costco, Sam's, and some Walgreen's have it.

Everybody's different, but my suggestion is not to stock up too much. I tried several different types and even after settling on one that tastes pretty good.......after a while you might get to where you can't deal with the taste or consistency any longer.

I think it might just be constant continued use causes boredom and subsequent distaste. You may find you will need to change things up periodically.

I dislike Unjury too, although they are pretty popular. I do like the Premier Protein shakes that Magtart likes. I have been also buying vanilla whey Protein Powder and adding things to jazz it up like berries, sugar free syrups, cinnamon, coffee, etc. I started out with Target's house brand powder which is $18 for a jar, because it was not such a huge investment if I did not like it. Turns out I do like it, and also Cytosport's vanilla Protein powder from costco, about $50 for a big bag, tastes quite similar to me. Good luck!

Ditto on Premier Protein ready to drink. Post op I wasn't that keen on them. I prefer Syntrax Nectars like Fuzzy navel, Lemon Tea, Cappachino, Roadside Lemonade

Check under food and Nutrition section for Protein. Lots of advise there and reviews.

I bought Premium whey Protein at sams club. I preferred vanilla and would add raspberry or caramel sugar free Syrup. I also used crystal light, any flavor. It tastes much better ice cold. MY NUT also allowed cream based Soups with skim milk. Using milk brought the Protein up to 12 or 13. I would strain out the mushrooms from the cream of mushroom, and the chicken from the cream of chicken. I added Italian seasoning to Tomato. Theses were great from lunch and supper and a nice break from all the sweet stuff.

Another thing the NUT let us do was eat greek yogurt, again straining out the fruit chunks. The guidelines I received were 15g protein, 5 g fat, and less than 10 sugar.

The combination was enough to keep from getting bored.

Prior to my surgery I LOVED Premier Protein, after I despised them, my taste buds totally changed! Now post op I get EAS and they have some great flavors. They come in four packs and I personally choose the Stawberry Cream as my first choice and second choice is Cafe Caramel. Hope you find one you like! Don't stock up to much as your taste buds MAY change. Wishing you best of luck!!

I have recently started my pre-pre-op diet and I have a totally irrational aversion to powdered drink mixes, to the point that I have put off having the surgery because that was a requirement. I was told about a Protein drink from bipro that is an unflavored product. I have used it several times now and I don't have any trouble with it at all. I make smoothies and mix it with Vitamin Water in a whisk bottle. It really is unflavored!!!! I ordered it from their website and it took about a week to get to me. www.biprousa.com. It is also on Amazon, but it is the same price and ships from the manufacturer, so would be just the same as ordering it direct.

Blend all ingredients in blender until smooth.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
