Boo I think it's in your best interest to just stop. Telling him or her is not the most important. I say stop because you have no idea what kind of tests they perform with blood or urine. Don't prolong what you want over a blunt. I was told I had to be nicotine free for 3mo because smoking could like really kill me so I decided to quit both.

For your pre op appt at the hospital they are going to test your blood for various items. Nicotine may be in your system, truthfully they want that to be cleared out of your system 30 days prior to surgery.

Your doctor needs to know the truth to ensure your going to be treated effectively. Good luck with your journey!

Anyone that is a smoker has an obligation to report it to their surgeon. Smoking increases your risks of a leak in addition to other post-op complications. Your doc can't prepare or plan for this if you aren't honest. There is a possibility that your surgery will be cancelled, but isn't that better than all of the what ifs that could happen? If something were to happen, you may lose any recourse against the physician because you weren't honest.

Either way, I'm wishing you the best for your surgery and new life. ; )

I wanted to give an update. My surgery was march 24th I smoked up until my surgery (I have a medical marijuana card) and I was cleared by my surgeon to begin smoking 3 days post op and have since. No problems, I just avoid coughing for discomfort. And I do not get the munchies now yay!

I disagree. The issue here wasn't the choice of product, it was the failure to disclose smoking (be it nicotine or marijuana) to the physician. I don't remember reading about edibles, so I'm assuming the product was inhaled. Marijuana affects the CNS, so there are definite surgical risks that the physician needs to be aware of in order to best care for their patient. My point wasn't to imply that the surgery couldn't occur, but that failure to disclose pertinent health information could lead to unintended consequences. Glad to read that you and your doc were able to agree on a treatment plan so you could proceed with your sleeve.

Smoking marijuana? I was straight with my doctor as I always am. No secrets between me and my surgeon. I have decided to stop smoking marijuana until after surgery and I am healed. I'm still trying to figure out if smoking weed causes ulcers. Wiki answers says yes but other pages say it helps with ulcers so idk. It will also be important to manage your munchies after smoking. Don't over il indulge and get sick and/or stretch your pouch. I think it best to be as honest as can be with your doctor, after all, He's operating on you and needs to know everything! Good luck! :-)

I smoke marijuana for pain control and there is no medical marijuana in Florida. I list it along with all my other medications. I've not had one doctor say anything about it. I haven't smoked any since December and I'll try not to smoke any after I get home. It just depends on whether my fibromyalgia flares up or whether I get a Migraine. I'm hoping neither of those things happen.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
