Feeling a little bit discouraged-vent

Recommended Posts

I haven't posted in a few days but I'm feeling a little bit discouraged already. I lost 15 lbs the first two weeks and nothing the past week. I am trying my best to eat the way my surgeon recommends which is Protein and a little bit of veg. Lots of fluids (low or no cal) i try my best to go with low carbs. I am just so anxious to get to my first short term goal of 25 lbs down because I have it in my head that I will believe that the band is working once I see that number. I havent been that weight in years so that is why I feel that way. In the past year I fluctuated between 230-250 so I would just really like to see 225 and that is only 10 lbs away! I realize I that this is a journey not a marathon and that I didn't put the weight on in a day and rome wasnt built in a day and blah blah all of those cliche things. That still doesn't stop the mentality that I and I'm sure many other people have. I just want to see that its working! I want to see that i didnt do this all for nothing. I'm sure I feel this way because I have been discouraged with other "diets" before. I am trying not to "diet" but just to eat better things...and of course less of these things. Anywho...I have my first fill on Friday so maybe it will help a bit. I'm not expecting much of a difference though but I suppose we will see!!

And please no negative comments. I don't tolerate rudeness. I am simply venting and I believe this site is a very good outlet for that and a very good support system. Thanx!! :)

I believe you just had surgery? And have yet to get the band adjusted?

When I was at that point, the band WAS NOT WORKING...Not yet anyway....I found it extremely frustrating...4 weeks after surgery, I started to gain the weight I lost during the 2 weeks pre surgery and the post op diet....because at 4 weeks I was allowed to stop the diet and start back up on solid, regular foods....

What has changed today from before you had the surgery? (trick Question)

It's like someone buying you a new car and now you're upset because you should be at the mall or picking up friends by now....but you have to learn how to drive first! And before you can drive the car, the Dr. needs to put some gas in it first to get it started....THEN you can start taking driving lessons...and in my case, 6 months later everything was running just fine, and has been ever since....

When do you go back to the Dr.?

Above is just a analogy...everyone DOES have different experiences, as yours will be also....

I'm right there with you! Banded on 1/21/14. Starting weight on 12/21/13 was 262; day of surgery 244; today 241. The scale has been as low as 238 - but I started exercising so I think I'm beginning to build muscle so I'm not totally discouraged (a little aggravated maybe cause I'd like to see more weight loss right away). I'm eating between 700-1000 calories per day plus doing cardio workouts - not adjusted yet. I can tell I'm losing inches and my body is changing shape, but I'd still like to lose more on the scale to prove I'm working hard. I just want you to know that you are not alone!

Although most of the cliches are true (journey not marathon), it doesn't change the way you feel right now - discouraged. And if you are like me, I can attribute most of my weight issues to emotional eating. Bottom line is that food/eating has brought me comfort over the years, but I've finally chosen to conquer that weakness.....and step 1 was lapband placement. I'm going to be patient as step 2 is just ahead of me - adjustments. Please hang in there and know that you are not alone. Much of my post is a personal pep talk too but I hope it helps you in some way.

You are entitled to every little feeling coursing through your body right now....and yep you hit all the cliches on the head!!!! You've lost 15 lbs already and that is awesome...give your body AND your mind a chance to heal. If it helps any....my doctor told me not to think about losing ANY weight for the first 6 weeks...it was all about healing and getting the mechanics down. Not something you want to hear when you just put yourself through surgery....you want results and you want them NOW! I do understand!

Our minds play some wicked games with us...dont let this one get the best of you...I know easier said than done...but dont let the mind games impede your weight loss! You deserve more that that! Try and take it one day at a time and focus on each accomplishment along the way...and it doesn't always have to be a scale victory for it to be a victory.

I am 5 months out and still learning new things about this band inside of me AND about myself as well! I do believe its going to be a long term learning curve....and I will learn it all darn it.

Hang in there...give it some time...treat yourself well...and it will come off...IT WILL!!!!!

Wishing you much success AND peace....keep us posted...and vent anytime!

;)

Wendy you are doing a great job! You have to remember that right now your body is trying to figure out what the heck is going on! I know it's hard but be patient and things will balance out .

You are not going to lose weight every day, every week or every month. That is what you have to get in your head. Stay off the scale and weigh yourself every other week. Just because you had wls does not mean you are going to lose weight all the time. 4 to 8 lbs a month is normal for lap band patients. Get rid of your scale and weigh yourself at your doctors appointment.

I would encourage you to set smaller goals and more specifically focus on those rather than getting trapped in thinking about your weight as the only number that matters.

I've barely lost any weight in the last 4 months but all of my clothes fit better; I've obviously put on muscle; and more importantly I am eating better and able to be so much more active.

Some suggested goals...

Exercise at least 5 minutes every single day.

Count all of your food calories

Get all of your recommended Protein

these are goals that you can consciously control unlike what the scale says which is gonna be effected by all kinds of factors you can't control like the weather and where you are on the globe relative to the equator not to mention your own hormonal cycles.

WLS is about an opportunity to retake control and get healthier; the weight loss itself is just a side effect.

Your doing great, don't let those scales rule you! You might be losing inches and not weight! It will come off, I promise, as long as you are following the guidelines it will work! I totally agree with everything Chasingadream said too! Your body is healing and takes a while too figure out what's going on!

Just hang in there and try to keep those positive thoughts flowing!

I think the slower the better! It's a journey and I remember when I was new at this I didn't want to hear that but now I know it's the only way! It's didn't come on over night and I can't take it off over night! Be patient and persistent and it will come off and more importantly stay off! Good luck'

My first fill is on Friday thanx the good lord! I totally understand what you are saying. It's just hard to know I went through the surgery already almost 4 weeks ago and the scale isn't moving. It's discouraging because I have lost quicker on some diets but after said diets I gained the weight back so I need to think of that too! I need to realize it will work once I get the fills it's just hard to realize it because I'm not there yet

I don't weigh every day. And while I appreciate the thought of "getting rid of my scale" that is simply not possible. I'm not going to go 4 weeks without knowing my weight. Weekly weigh in will keep be on track way better than 4 week weigh in will.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
