Having a debate with someone. I drink a Gold Standard whey Protein Shake (24 or 27 grams of protein) every morning for Breakfast with 8oz unsweetened Almond milk, 1/2 banana & a tsp of Peanut Butter. I'm being told whey Protein will make me gain weight because it builds muscle. I do about 30 minutes of cardio 3-4 times per week. What are your thoughts? Do you recommend a different protein?

Banded on 10/15/13 and down 23 lbs. Had my second fill of 1.8 ccs 2/5/13. Total fill 6.8 ccs in my 11 band. Still not in green zone but stuck in Bandster Hell.

First, building muscle is good right? Muscles burn calories and fat doesn't.

As long as you're not building excess muscle what's the downside? We're instructed to consume Protein to avoid being hungry and to help build muscle since most of us were complacent during our obesity period.

The idea is to build and strengthen our bodies so as long as you're not consuming more Protein than your body needs I see no problem.

Not banded yet but have been on a zillion diets. Protein is does build muscle and muscle in turn burns fat. Muscle does weigh more than fat, however I would gladly take a gain in a few pounds of muscle over a gain of fat any day! I wouldn't be so concerned with the amt of protein as I would the number of calories in the powder and other ingredients in the shake. If your shake is relatively low in calories that should be fine. I have always been encouraged to use the whey protein because it's better absorbed by the body.

Whey Protein with isolates which everyone should be drinking does not bulk you up or build muscle. It is the other Protein that body builders drink.

If I am reading this correctly you had your sugery on 10/15/13. unless your doctor gave you the thumbs up you shouldn't be drinking any calories. now some banders can't eat in the morning due to morning time tightness. but until your band is adjusted correctly you should be able to eat solids 3 times a day. most doctors don't want liquid calories. I choose to use Protein shakes when I haven't gotten in my Protein count of 60 a day at the minimum. and go with what Cheryl said. whey protein is actually the best for us.

I have a Protein Shake mid morning too. I usually am tighter in the morning, so the way I make sure I get the Protein that I need per day is one shake. I am properly adjusted, no way can I eat all the protein, veggies, fruit, that my body needs without some liquid help. Right or wrong.., it just is.

This is what I was told also. I use Syntrax nectar, you could Google it. Also Cosco has one named Premeire that some say are good. Those are premixed in grab and go containers. Read the labels and find low carb. product.

They told me Thursday I can have a shake in the morning if I want., Some people just can't eat in the morning so drink. Banana's are high in carbs, so they told me not to eat, if I do be careful.

Good luck to you.

I also agree that after a period of time you shouldn't be drinking calories. I would rather eat 200 calories of real food then drink a Protein shake and be hungry in an hour. Liquid diets don't work. I am sure we all did slim fast when it came out and did it work. Yes until you stopped drinking it.

That is not true!!!! I have been banded for over three years now and whey protein is the ONLY thing I have and still use. I've lost 90 pounds and lots of inches.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
