How much did your surgery cost?

Recommended Posts

Hi eggwithlegs. I'm from an aussie too. When did u have ur op? How come it was free?

Hi had my op Dec 5 in Perth. I think it's because I have good insurance, not medicare, that might be it and the fact that they view being overweight life threatening. You have to have a bmi over 40.

I paid maybe 600.00 out of pocket. The rest was covered by my insurance. And I live in Texas.

Where are you yummy mummy? WLS is nearly impossible to get on NHS - they keep on changing the rules. NICE says BMI of 40 but most Local authorities say BMI 50. In UK sleeve prices are £7000+, I went to Czech Rep and had to pay £4500. I even had to beg my GP to do the pre-op blood tests, she said I was not entitled. I did offer to go away and put on weight as my BMI was only 47 and then come back and ask for wls and go on the never ending list, she eventually gave in.

OMG I sooo feel you on this was, NHS is impossible if you are under 50BMI, and even then the waiting list is mile long, I'm talking about years. I will have my surgery in Hungary and my GP is flat out refusing to do any pre-op testing, only EKG I was able to get out of him! So I will have to have all my pre-ops in Hungary and I will only have a week to do so, so I am very worried! I hope I will be able to squeeze in everything I need for the surgery. By the way mine cost about $5500. (Where did you go in the Czech Republic? You can PM me if you prefer! Thanks!)

I paid 600.00 ( program fee, what I got for that, I have no clue) and 200.00 for psych eval. My surgeon charged 7k and assistant surgeon charged 1500.00. Not sure what the hospital bill was, haven't seen it yet. I have primary and secondary so doubt I will pay anything.

The total for the operation would have only been $4,000 anyway.

My insurance didn't cover my surgery one bit. I had to pay 10 grand out of pocket.

I am so thankful for insurance. The original bill for my hospital stay, not including the surgeon or anesthesia was over $56,000!

That is before insurance though, they will only pay a fraction of that and I paid $1,000 out of pocket.

I don't know how to quote. To the person that says you can't drink the Water in Mexico , they provide you with bottled water (from Costco). Honestly, I have issues anyway so I always drink bottled water when I go out of town. And it can't be arrowhead, that causes problems too.

Oh, and, we (mother in law) and I went to TJ. We each paid $3995. Included our liquids, hotel stay, everything. The only other expense was travel and parking, which was less then $200. Grandpa paid for both of us so technically I didn't pay anything.

I have an HDHP so my deductible is 2750, but my employer puts 1800 in my HSA each year so my cost is $950 out of pocket and those dollars are paid from the HSA with additional pre-tax dollars that I put in, so I feel pretty happy with what I had to pay!

No insurance. I went to TJ, Mexico. 5200.00 + 400.00 air fare. I paid more because of my BMI. No regrets! Awesome surgeon and staff. Well worth it!

I haven't had my surgery yet and have been torn between the Sleeve and the Lap-Band. Out of pocket for the sleeve will cost me $15,100. This includes all my pre-op testing, hospital stay, anesthesiologist, my psychological evaluation, Opti-Fast liquid diet before surgery. I am going to the seminar this Monday and then it is full steam ahead.

Zuzu, have you thought about going to Mexico? Dr. Garcia is awesome and it would save you 10,000.00!!!

Good luck in what ever you decide.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
