Doc wants 14 day pre-op....hhhmmmm.

Recommended Posts

Dear Conscience,

As you clearly recall, we went to the doctor yesterday and did our final pre-op appointment. We have our date on 2/24. You know that we bought all of the pre-op shakes. You also know the doc told us 14 days for pre op diet.

Contrarily, the Assistant only provided us with 10 days worth of shakes and cluelessly pointed to 2/12 on her calendar and told us to start on that day.

So, trusty old Conscience, should we call the doc to confirm that he really wanted a 14 day pre-op diet?

Or should we just pretend that the assistant was correct and just follow a 12 day plan?

I mean, c'mon...........who's going to know? But you know what the right thing to do is even if the 2 days doesn't make a difference physically.........you will also always know that we cheated 2 days before we even began this journey. But.......2 less days of dieting and 2 more days of eating would be enjoyable...... Hmmmmm

Respectfully yours, Me

My surgeon used to do 2 full weeks and now it is only 10... 10 should be fine. I was also allowed one half cup non-starchy veggies per day. That is enough time to detox your liver.

No one is going to know! I cheated and I asked my surgeon "how was my liver" and he said it was great. So do the best you can in those 10 days. Also, nothing to eat or drink after midnight before your surgery and my surgeon said only clears after 6pm til midnight.

ideally it is great if you can follow the diet to the letter b/c research shows that detoxing your liver preoperatively results in far less complications.

I crown you 'worst advise' award.

I get to do a 15 day Meal Replacement plan, yeah me, but if I cheat on that I'm again allowing myself to loose control which is something I promised myself I wouldn't do again. That's what got me where I am. Don't do it...... Be honest with yourself, you have to start now if you want to succeed.

You're right. No one's gonna know. But YOU'LL know. And in our prep class we were told that one reason for the pre-op, besides shrinking your liver, etc is to test your own compliance. For you to have to take a good look into yourself and see if you can be compliant with what is asked of you. To prepare you of what's to come, sure. But this is also something more. Do not cheat yourself.

This is what conflicts me:)

What could I use to fill the other 2 days worth of food? He gave me opti fast 4 shake/2bar per day. I don't want to drive back to his office.....it's quite a way.

Go to GNC... They will help you. My surgery is February 12 I fell off the wagon twice... I feel guilty. Does food hv that much power over me?! Yes it does! I hv 3 days shakes. 4th day Clear liquids. I WILL DO THIS!

Chances are the day right before your surgery is Clear Liquids only. As for the other day, go get some muscle milk if nothing else. That's the least I'd do. But going to GNC sounds like a great plan.

make sure whatever you eat/drink is low in carbs/sugar/fat. That is what will detox your liver. Try your best to stay on track but we are human and we sometimes make mistakes...learn from it and move forward. You can and will do this!

I have 2 days clear at the end so I need to make up 2 days worth. Can I use Quest bars and some zero carb powder with skim milk?( not that I have ever had those items but they seem to get popular items around the forum)

Call your surgeons office and explain your dilemma. They can tell you best what they would prefer you do. I just hope you don't cheat yourself - You want to start your new life being honest and accountable to yourself. Good Luck.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
